2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV – driven for economy.

The 2026 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. I drove it all week, and the fuel gauge didn’t move. In a sea of greys and silvers, this one turns up in proper red — a big black grille, silver trim linking the headlights, and twenty-inch alloys.    2026-mitsubishi-outlander-phev-exceed-front-straight-on-5 For a family car, it has real presence.

Inside, leather-appointed seats, twin 12.3-inch screens, and a panoramic roof. The back seat swallowed two adults and their gear without a complaint.

Here’s how it works. A 2.4-litre petrol engine, two electric motors, 221 kilowatts all up. The 22.7 kilowatt-hour battery gives 103 kilometres of electric range — so the school run, the shops and the commute all happen on electricity. Charge it overnight from an ordinary power point.

On the road it just coasts along nicely — smooth, quiet, with Australian-tuned suspension that irons out the bumps.

Five-star ANCAP. Up to ten years of warranty. All-wheel drive. From $71,640 before on-roads.

The Outlander PHEV. Electric savings, without the range anxiety.

What is good?

  • Smooth ride for something this large. The Australian suspension tuning is real.
  • Physical buttons, and safety systems that don’t nag.
  • Genuine road presence, and it pops in Red Diamond

What is not so good?

  • CHAdeMO charge port locks you out of nearly every public fast charger.
  • The cruise control isn’t intuitive.
  • The price. Several plug-in rivals do a similar job for $15,000 to $25,000 less.
