It’s all elegance and style, beautiful to look at and luxurious inside.

Typically French, the interior comes with everything you want including front massage seats that got a lot of use. There is wireless smart phone charging, a clear 10-inch central screen and a 12.3 inch driver instrument panel.

It comes with a 1.6L turbo petrol engine and an 81-kilowatt electric motor. This combination provides reasonably good performance combined with excellent economy.

It drives the front wheels through an eight speed sports automatic transmission.

The EV only mode was giving us around 50km on a charge and that was enough for most of my daily driving. It was easy to charge at home and didn’t take too long.

The beauty of a plug-in hybrid is that if you don’t get around to charging overnight, then there is no range anxiety with the petrol engine.

Charging was easy and didn’t take too long.

The 508 GT PHEV Sportswagon was smooth, quiet and easy to drive and almost limousine like in its ride.

Priced from a little under $83,000 plus the usual costs its actually good value compared to other European brands.

Large Premium Saloons are few and far between these days. The Audi S8 Quattro comes with a 4.0-litre TFSI V8 engine producing a power of 420kW and 800Nm of torque. Combine this with Quattro drive and an eight speed Tiptronic transmission. This will catapult the S8 from 0-100km/h in just 3.8 seconds, before reaching a limited top speed of 250 km/h.

But the S8 Quattro is more than numbers alone. It’s absolutely packed with everything Audi can put in there for performance, luxury, comfort, and safety.

The S8 is also deceptively quick. It’s so quiet, so powerful, so fast and so stable, that on the freeway you find yourself looking down and it feels like it’s driving 30 or 40 kmh less than you actually are.

There is also a bit of a split personality. The big V8 will happily potter around town without fuss. However, select Dynamic drive mode, switch the transmission to sport and feel the beast being released.

When you consider what you need to spend to get anything even close to the big Audi S8, its surprisingly good value at around $273,000 plus options and the usual costs.

I drove the SL model last week, and even though I also like my SUV’s I have to say I really enjoyed the Camry.

The current model has been around for a while now and is starting to show its age a bit. However, it’s one of those cars that make you feel at home as soon as you sit in it.

Camry Hybrid is quiet and smooth to drive, comfortable to sit in and easy to live with.

Of course, the SL models comes well equipped with little luxuries like heated and cooled front seats, panoramic view monitor and roof and a heads-up display.

The main reason for the Camry popularity is the 2.5L petrol hybrid engine and its stunning fuel economy. It comes with front wheel drive and a simple 6 step CVT.

I had a mix of lots of city driving and motorway cruising and my overall economy figure was 5.5L/100k.  I could easily see myself getting over a thousand kilometres out of a tank of fuel.

So, it has reduced driving emissions and zero range anxiety.

The problem is that the Camry Hybrid is so popular that there currently is a pause on orders. This is due to global supply issues for little things like semi-conductors.

Funny how the little things can cause such big delays.

Overall, the Camry Hybrid stands firm against the continued swing to SUV’s.

More Camry Hybrid SL Thoughts

• Even though the design has been around for a while it still looks good.
• The Camry SL comes packed with a heap of features for the price.
• Inside the front seats are comfortable and supportive
• Heated and cooled for comfort.
• Central screen is small by today’s standards.
• Apple CarPlay is great, but the screen functionality needs some work.
• Rear seats are a little flat and tight for leg room.
• Boot is long, not very deep and has a small opening.
• Engine is smooth and economical.
• It really doesn’t matter how you drive it; it never seems to get above 5.5l/100k.
• No inconvenience waiting for a charger when on a trip, no range anxiety
• Its easy to drive but the front wheel drive can be a but slippery in the wet.
• One thing that caught me by surprise is how low the front is. IT scraped over driveways and speed bumps. They required a level of caution that would prove annoying over a longer time.
• If I was brand conscious, I would feel like I was driving a taxi.
• Can’t order one now. Have to wait for the new model.

Also look at.

Sedans are a dwindling market unfortunately. The segment is dominated by the Toyota Camry Hybrid.

Other choices include, Mazda6 Atenza,  Honda Civic HEV LX,  Hyundai Sonata, Citroen C5-X, Peugeot 508 GT, Genesis G70, or the Audi A4.

Toyota Camry Hybrid SL final thoughts

Camry is really starting to show its age, but its aged well in some areas not so much in others.

It’s a victim of its own popularity. The demand is so great that supply has been suspended currently because of component parts supply issues.

There is a reason the Camry Hybrid is popular. Its good value, genuinely economical, and comfortable to drive.

Pity it doesn’t come in an AWD wagon version.

I came to this conclusion when driving the Genesis G70 Shooting Brake this week.

Here is a stylish, practical, and comfortable vehicle that has an abundance of luggage space.

Inside its all luxury and comfort. Heated and ventilated quilted Nappa leather front seats, large driver digital instrument cluster including dash cams for blind spots.

Other technology includes a 10.5-inch infotainment system with inbuilt navigation, wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity and an extensive Genesis Active Safety Control suite.

Powering the G70 Shooting Brake is 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder producing 179kW and 353Nm and driving the rear wheels via an advanced in-house developed eight-speed automatic transmission.

Ride and handling can be modified by the drive mode select function.

For the more enthusiastic drivers there is selective Drive Mode with 5 settings: Eco, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ & Custom.

It’s quiet, smooth, and compliant to drive and reasonably responsive. I would love to see a version with the 3.3L twin turbo V6 engine and AWD. That would be special.

The Genesis G70 Shooting Brake Sport is priced from around $76,700 plus the usual costs and its great value.

I love it and its dam near perfect.

The big question is would I choose the A8 or the Q8. Why not have both.
