This is good news as the Accord has been a popular model over the years.

The other good news is that it is coming with a hybrid engine only.

Honda was one of the pioneers of hybrid technology along with Toyota, but it fell by the side of the road for a few years.

They are now back with enthusiasm. I recently drove the HRV Hybrid and were impressed.

All-new Accord features the latest Fourth-Generation two-motor hybrid system, first released in the New CR-V e:HEV RS.

This new Fourth Generation system includes a newly refined 2.0-liter Atkinson cycle 4-cylinder engine, now with direct fuel injection. Mated to a pair of larger and more powerful electric motors which are now mounted side-by-side.

The new model is longer, sleeker and more luxurious than before.

In a world that is all about SUVs and talking about EVs, having hybrid sedans as a buyer choice is a good thing. Just ask Toyota with their Camry Hybrid.

The HR-V is a stylish, compact urban SUV that comes with reasonable interior space and a lot of safety and comfort features.

The Honda HR-V has had many changes over the years and the latest version is the most elegant.

At the heart is a hybrid electric powertrain with two compact, powerful electric motors. These work alongside an Atkinson cycle 1.5-litre petrol engine, a lithium-ion battery, and a fixed gear transmission.

The power control unit constantly cycles between Electric Drive, Hybrid Drive or Engine Drive depending on which is the most fuel-efficient drive mode at that time.

What all that means is that the HR-V Hybrid has excellent economy of around 4.3 litres per 100 kilometres. Its also zippy around town with a smooth ride.

Inside the HR-V is comfortable, with good driver ergonomics and plenty of space considering its overall size. The seats are particularly comfortable and the rear seat and boot area benefits from Honda’s “magic seat” design which gives maximum flexibility.

Overall Honda’s HR-V hybrid SUV is a tidy little unit and priced from $47,000 drive away.

It also shows a return to better design from Honda, something that has been absent in recent years.

The ZR-V comes in three different models with a petrol engine and one model with a hybrid engine.

This little SUV manages to look both stylish and muscular with a longer sloping bonnet and full wheel arches. I like the design and it looks bigger than it is. Think of a Civic on high heels.

Inside the ZR-V is well laid out with plenty of room for taller front occupants. The seats are comfortable, the steering wheel feels good in the hands and the overall visibility is open.

Like a lot of SUVs this size the rear seats are cramped, and the boot is small.

Standing out is the 9-inch central touch screen that has good user response and clarity. Another example of Honda finding its way again.

The normal models come with a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine that drives the front wheels through a one speed CVT. The Hybrid version comes with a 2.0L petrol hybrid engine and the same CVT.

I drove the petrol version and found it to be responsive and easy to drive. It was smooth, quiet, and reasonably economical.

Pricing for the ZR-V ranges from $40,200 through to $54,900 for the Hybrid version. These are driveaway prices.

Honda Civic is a stylish smaller hatchback that has lost a bit of popularity over the last few years. That’s a shame as it’s really very good.

With sleek styling, long wheelbase for its size and low profile it has some presence.

Inside the Civic is well laid out and comfortable for the driver and passengers.

I like the steering wheel and driver instrument layout. The dials are large and full of information.

The large central touch screen stands out a little but is user friendly and practical. Wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity is a bonus.

Rear seats are as you would expect for this size car and the boot is spacious and practical.

The standout feature is the hybrid engine. It’s quiet, responsive, and economical.

We were using around 5.4 litres per hundred kilometres around town. That’s outstanding.

We drove all week, had a couple of longer trips, and barely used any petrol at all.

Overall, I liked the Honda Civic Hybrid hatch. Well worth a look, especially at around $55,000 drive away.

Quick thoughts about the Civic Hybrid e-HEV

• Honda Civic is a stylish hatch design.
• It looks good from pretty much any angle.
• Interior impression is minimalist and spacious.
• Inside the front seats are comfortable and supportive
• Rear seats are as you would expect. A little restricted in space but inviting. Better for two not three people.
• I like the internal feel and layout.
• It is driver focussed and the steering wheel and drivers’ instruments all are clear and easy to read.
• Steering wheel is thick and fits in hand easily.
• Wireless Apple CarPlay and charging is a nice touch.
• I am a fan of the digital dash. Also, a fan of the central screen
• Not a fan of the window wipers with washer in the blades.
• Overall visibility is good.
• Walk away locking is not too sensitive which is good.
• The engine is smooth, zippy, and exceptionally economical.
• There is a selection of drive modes, and the hybrid system is invisible. You can’t really feel when it slips in and out of EV mode.
• Hybrid is the best balance between EV and fuel driving. Economy was about 5.4L/100K and that’s outstanding.
• I think I would prefer an automatic transmission but the CVT does a good job.
• There is zero range anxiety as I can just fill up when needed in five minutes and be on my way.
• I particularly like appreciate the hatchback design. It makes so much more sense than a sedan, and looks better as well
• There is plenty of boot space for weekends away of longer trips.

Also look at.

Hybrid sedans or hatchbacks are a good alternative to either a SUV or EV. But there isn’t a lot of them available.

Buyers could look at the obvious choice the Toyota Camry Hybrid, or the Corolla Hybrid.

Otherwise there is the Audi A3 35 TFSI MH, Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, Kia NIRO Hybrid, or the upcoming Peugeot 408 PHEV.

Honda Civic Hybrid final thoughts

I have to say I’m a BIG FAN

Sleek hatchback styling combined with premium interior sets the tone.

The hybrid engine is zippy and economical. Most importantly its easy to drive and fun when asked to be.

Its also staring to be a little pricey, but good value at $55,000 RDAP.

Its an excellent alternative to a full electric vehicle or PHEV and the ever-increasing SUVs that are about.

First up it looks the part with low sleek 4 door hatchback design, huge rear spoiler, ultra-low profile tyres and a tri exhaust system.

I have to say it certainly attracted a lot of attention when I was driving it.

It also has a delightful exhaust note courtesy of the tri exhaust outlets.

The Civic Type R is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that delivers up to 235kW of power and 420 Nm of torque. This drives the front wheels through a smooth six speed manual transmission.

While there isn’t an official 0-100kmh time it should do mid to high 5.0 second times.

The interior is sports car focused with red sports seats and trim, an abundance of information available through the 9-inch central touch screen and an Alcantara sports steering wheel.

Overall, the Civic Type R is responsive and a lot of fun to drive.

The latest model is priced from $72,600 plus the usual costs.

Many years ago, I owned a Honda CRX, a 1989 or 90 model I think it was. It was a practical hot hatch style vehicle. Essentially it was a go cart. Low to the ground, gripped corners like a limpet and useable performance when you worked the transmission. It wasn’t the fastest, but it was HUGE fun.

The hatchback styling was also immensely practical. We used to pack a lawn mower and whipper snipper in it and head to the beach house to mow the lawn.

Fast forward to 2023 and the latest Type R feels similar. It retains the hatch practicality; it grips like a limpet and is FUN to drive.

I must be getting a bit older (obviously), but the suspension sometimes feels a little harsh for everyday driving and the torque steer adds to the excitement.

Unfortunately, the small sports car segment is slowly contracting. Hot hatches were huge many years ago but are now being replaced by small SUVs or even electric cars.

Buyers could look at the Toyota GR Corolla, Subaru WRX, Hyundai i30N, Audi S3, Renault Megane RS, or even the Audi SQ2.  

If you don’t mind having no exhaust blip, then you could look at the Kia EV6 GT Line, Subaru Solterra, or Hyundai IONIQ5.

In a world that is heading towards SUVs and EVs, cars like the Civic Type R restore order.

It looks great, feels awesome to drive and isn’t too expensive.

It’s a practical sports hatch that provides enormous fun.

Campaigns were run in conjunction with Movember, Starlight Children’s Foundation, White Ribbon Australia, Head Space, Camp Quality and the Leukemia Foundation.

The foundation has supported The Kidney Foundation for work to modify their ‘Big Red Kidney Bus’, which helps to enable patients with severe kidney issues and requiring dialysis to come onto the bus for treatment.

For every new Honda vehicle sold in Australia, $30 is donated to The Honda Foundation.

Funded by contributions from Honda Australia and the 86 Honda Centre’s across the country that are an important part of local communities. For every new Honda vehicle sold in Australia, $30 is donated to The Honda Foundation.

The Honda Foundation understands the power of mobility by operating a 12-month Loan Vehicle Program which includes registration, insurance, and all servicing costs. This program is capped at 20 loan vehicles at any one time, but allows organisations who care for the disadvantaged, to accompany them to appointments and various other activities.

All the work and support that The Foundation has given across the last 12-18 months to surpass the $14 million in donations, would not be made possible without the dedication and work of all organisation’s and worthy causes across Australia.
