I had the Sorento GT-Line all wheel drive hybrid electric vehicle.

This is the top spec model that comes equipped with everything you could possibly want in terms of comfort, safety and luxury features. It also looks quite smart with the design refresh last year.

Priced from around $73,300 plus the usual costs the Sorento Hybrid GT-Line is actually great value.

I really like the huge screen that seems to flow from in front of the driver through to the central stack area. Its clear and easy to read.  Especially the reverse camera.

Other features I Like are the exceptionally comfortable front seats. Heated, ventilated and supportive.

Middle row seats are great for taller people, but the third row is really for early teens. There are five top tether and 4 isofix Child Restraint Anchorage Points. The flexibility of rear folding seats is another plus point.

The 1,6 litre hybrid petrol engine has enough performance for most drivers and is particularly economical. I averaged around 6.5 litres per hundred kilometres for the time I was driving. With a new dial transmission, it takes a little getting used to but works well when you do.

Its easy to see why the Sorento is so popular with families. It is so easy to live with.

Regular listeners will know I have been a big fan of the diesel Sportage over the years, not the petrol. But the Hybrid version has changed that. Its good, very good.

Being the top model the GT Line, it comes with a host of little luxury features like heated and ventilated front leather seats with multiple electronic adjustment for the driver. Another feature is the  nearly 25 inches of driver’s instrument cluster and central screen, that all merge into one.

At the heart is a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol-electric hybrid system that has combined 169kW of power and 350Nm of torque. This is matched to a 6 speed AT.

This provides spritely acceleration and excellent economy. We averaged around 6.0l/100km for the week. That’s pretty good.

The Sportage is an ideal mid size. Its small enough to be an urban runabout as well as large enough for longer driving trips and weekends away.

For buyers that don’t want to deal with the issues of living with an EV every day, hybrids are especially desirable. There is no range anxiety, excellent economy and in the case of the Sportage GT-Line comfortable, safe and luxurious.

Priced from around $55,500 plus the usual costs its also good value.

Kia had graciously organised a transport from the airport to the Hotel. The vehicle was a Kia Carnival.

Regular listeners will realise that I am a big fan of the Carnival. It rides and handles like an SUV, has an abundance of room inside and the latest model has quite sleek styling.

The vehicle we had for the trip was fa few years old and had some 300,000 plus kilometres on it. I was talking to the driver and asked him if he liked it. He told me he had just ordered another one and two Sorento’s for his business.

Here is a driver whose business is all about passenger comfort and he uses the Kia daily.

On the reverse trip we had another Carnival, but a different driver. On this trip we had some other passengers as well. Now here is where the practicality of the Carnival shines. The rear boot space soaked up the luggage of five adults without fuss.

As a motoring Journalist I rarely get to be a passenger, and almost never in the third-row seats. So, I volunteered to sit in the back. I’m 190cm tall and built larger than the average bear. I fitted easily. Plenty of head room, knee, and leg room. And the ride was smooth and comfortable. Getting in and out for someone my size certainly won’t win any elegance awards, but it served the purpose.

There is a reason why the Carnival is the dominant selling vehicle in the family wagon. Its that good.
