2026 Jaecoo J5 EV – Driven for 2026

The 2026 Jaecoo J5 EV. All electric SUV.  Plain outside, plain inside. So why did the kit list keep surprising me? No grille, aero alloys, and you can tell it’s Chinese from across the car park.

2026-jaecoo-j5-ev-summit-front-1536x1024 Inside, the bit I wasn’t expecting. A glass roof, ventilated seats. A 360-degree camera and a 13.2-inch upright screen.

All comes standard.

The driver’s display does everything the big ones do; at a size you have to go looking for.

Now to the power and outputs

  • 155 kilowatts,
  • zero to 100 in 7.7 seconds.
  • 9 kilowatt-hours,
  • 402 kilometres claimed.
  • My commuting week:
  • 4 kilowatt-hours per hundred k,
  • 300 kilometres from full to 9 percent.

How does it drive?

Competent. That’s my word.

Quicker off the mark than the Leapmotor B10.

Reversing down my own driveway, it stopped dead with nothing behind it.

Every clean run before that, it has decided, was luck.

Eight-year unlimited warranty. Eight years of servicing for $1,520. No options list.

The price on the sign is the price, which is rarer than it should be. From $35,990 before on roads.

The Jaecoo J5 EV. Entry-level electric, without the entry-level equipment list.

What is good?

  • Value for money
  • 8 year unlimited kilometre warranty and fixed price service
  • Reasonable range and good economy.

What is not so good?

  • Drivers position restricted for taller drivers.
  • Air con struggled on hot days.
  • No full-size spare

Alterative choices for the Jaecoo J5 EV

The closest rival is the Leapmotor B10. They’re similar cars and both have their strengths: the J5 feels a little quicker off the mark, it comes with a physical key, and it’s fairly relaxed with its warnings apart from the reverse brake. The B10 just edges it out.

The Kia EV3 Earth is the nicer car and a long way up the price list, and if you want smaller again, the Hyundai Inster is there for similar money. The Atto 3, the S5 EV and the EX5 are the other cross-shops at this price, and I haven’t driven them.
