My answer wasn’t something he wasn’t expecting.

I said there are so many Subaru’s there  because they are probably the best vehicle available for snowy and icy conditions. They are the only true 4WD. That is where all four wheels have continual drive sent to them all the time.

The Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is perhaps the best 4WD available. Followed closely by Audi’s quattro system.

But they aren’t the only vehicles that I would take to the snow. Obviously, any Audi Quattro equipped model would be high on my choice list.

This would be followed by any model that has full time 4WD like a Land Rover or Toyota Prado, Kluger, LandCruiser. After that any dual range 4WD that allows shift on the fly changes that allows you to drive on bitumen in 4WD high. Then any dual range 4WD model.

Note that there are plenty of people that venture into the snow fields in 2WD vehicles. But honestly once you have to fit snow chains on the side of the road in the mud, sleet and rain. You will never want to do it again.

Quick tip highlights

• Make sure your car is serviced, and everything is in good order. Extreme cold will find any problems very fast
• Check your tyres. They are all that is providing grip for you when it gets bad
• If needed fill up with Alpine diesel when you get closer to the snow fields. This has a higher freezing temperature.
• If needed use antifreeze in your radiator
• If you need to take snow chains practice with them before you go. The side of the road in freezing conditions isn’t the place to learn
• When in the snow if you can, park facing slightly downhill
• Leave your wipers up when parked
• If you have snow covering your vehicle let your car idle for a while to heat up the windows. NEVER pour hot water on frozen glass.

Slow and steady wins the race here. No sudden braking, cornering, or acceleration. If you have snow mode on your transmission, use it. Don’t use cruise control at all.

Keep extra distance between you and the car in front and I simply forget about overtaking.

I always drive with my headlights on and if its particularly snowy, my hazards as well. Keep the heater on the windows to prevent them fogging up.

Keep an eye out for black ice, which is hard. If I can I try to follow someone, but if caught on black ice don’t panic as you will slide so just take you foot off the accelerator and steer into the skid direction. Don’t brake as you will slide even more.

Also, its much harder to see wildlife in snowy conditions, especially early or late in the day.

If its hard for you, imagine how much harder it is for trucks. Keep a safe distance and never cut in front of them.

First up is always park in marked areas, that way the snow ploughs know where cars are.

Leave the car in gear but don’t put the handbrake on. Park facing slightly downhill or flat of you can. You may chock the wheels if necessary and turn the wheels away from the slope of the road.

If you need to fit snow chains, i.e. a 2WD vehicle, then sometimes its wise to fit them overnight, That way of it snows overnight you don’t need to fit them in the morning.

If you need to put your key in the door handle to open it, cover the lock overnight.

Always remember to lift your wipers.  And when trying to remove ice or snow from the windscreen never use boiling water. Your windscreen could crack instantly.

Instead use slightly warm water and an ice scraper. Don’t try using your wipers. Better still start the engine and put the defroster on while the engine is warming up. This will also allow any snow on the bonnet to slide off.

When driving off do it slowly and be aware of any snow on the roof if you brake.
