The new car sales results have come in for the full year 2025. And the biggest news is that it’s more of the same.

Overall, there were 1,241,037 vehicles sold in 2025, This is close to 2024 figures.

Consumers continue to favour SUVs with around 60% of sales, LCVs which are Utes and vans are about 22.5% and the decline in passenger car sales continues.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice followed by Diesel. The growth segment is in hybrids and PHEVs. These now account for about 20% of all vehicle sales.

This makes sense as hybrids provide better economy , lower emissions without any inconvenience.

Battery electric vehicle sales from all sources totalled 103,269 units, accounting for 8.3 per cent of sales for the year.

Despite more than 100 battery electric vehicle models available in Australia, growth in the segment has been slower than expected.

What is interesting is where our vehicles come from.

Japan remained the largest source country, followed by Thailand. Then China and Korea is in fourth place. Together, these four major Asian manufacturing nations represent 80 per cent of the market.

Chinese built vehicles now account for about 18% of sales.

Toyota remains the dominant brand with a touch under 20% share. Followed by Ford, Mazda, Kia, and Hyundai. The next five brands are Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, Isuzu and MG.

This is a Motoring Minute

In short, each vehicle manufacturer must meet an increasingly restrictive average CO2 emission for its fleet or face penalties. This penalty will translate to higher prices for our vehicles.

The best way for manufacturers to meet the NVES targets is to sell a heap of Electric vehicles.

The problem is that buyers are showing they don’t want EVs.

Demand has dropped from almost 10% last year to 4% or recorded sales this year. Initial demand was met by early adopters and second wave buyers. Government agencies, large corporations, and some individual stragglers are the only people buying EVs.

EV’s make some sense for localised urban travel. The have zero driving emissions which helps pollution.

However, sales of Hybrids and PHEVs are booming. These vehicles make sense for the long distances Australians travel. They are convenient, economical and don’t restrict our lifestyles. FBT exemptions fuel demand for PHEVs..

The NVES legislation is yet another example of legislation where a government simply gets it wrong and is out of touch with everyday Australians.

NVES- From the 1st of January 2025 the new NVES legislation came into effect. This is the Governments draconian legislation to try to force consumers into buying EVs that don’t suit our lifestyles.

It is nothing short of woke platitudes pandering to the Climate Change Cultists. Man made CO2 is not a problem. And Australia is already in a net positive position for CO2 emissions. Our trees alone absorb more than enough CO2 and produce Oxygen

So, what will the NVES legislation mean. It’s a clever attempt by the Government to say they aren’t penalising consumers but rather encouraging manufacturers to bring more EVs into their model range. However, it’s been shown that as consumers we like our SUVs and Utes.

Essentially the legislation means that if a brand doesn’t meet specified CO2 emissions across its model range, then they will be penalised.

Now we all know that the car manufacturers will pass those penalties onto the consumers in higher prices. But the Government can wash their hands and say it wasn’t them.

Its yet another r example of how out of touch the Politicians are with everyday Australians.

This is a Motoring Minute

It’s called the NVES – New Vehicle Emissions Standards. Essentially the government is trying to force consumers to but electric cars. No matter what they say, that’s their plan and that’s daft. We want to choose the style of car that suits our needs.

An example of how a manufacturer can provide that choice is the Audi Q8. This is a large premium SUV that has embraced a wide spectrum of engine choices.

There is a choice of two body styles, the SUV and Stylish Sportback.

Depending on what model you choose there is either a 6-cylinder petrol or diesel engine. A V8 TFSI petrol engine in the SQ8 or RSQ8 with different tune specifications and mild hybrid technology. There is a Plug in Hybrid version and fully electric choices in both normal and sport tune.

Personally, the Audi Q8 is a favourite of mine, and I have driven all these choices.

Australian consumers want choice. The Government is trying to force us to buy a particular vehicle that doesn’t do what we need.

New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES). – There has been a lot of talk recently around the proposed New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES).

The present government is looking to introduce tighter rules around what style of cars can be sold in Australia.

Essentially, they are placing the responsibility on the manufacturers. They have to come up with a product mix that meets their pre-determined emission standards across all models sold.

Like a lot of government initiatives, the idea may have some merit, but the implementation has almost zero basis of practicality.

I’m all for a cleaner environment, but the practical implementation of any of the government options won’t achieve that.

All it will do is make cars more expensive. It may also see a few manufacturers stop selling cars in Australia as a result.

What we are seeing here is an ideological proposal put together by boffins. They are out of touch with the realities of everyday living in Australia.

The government must do Cost benefit analysis for any change. The proposed New Vehicle Emissions Standard simply doesn’t make the cut.

If you want a say, you can make a comment on the government site, the link is in the article on our site. More discussion is needed before we make changes. Changes, that may place further financial hardship on everyday Australians.
