The Grand Cherokee is a luxurious and comfortable, large 4WD. The 5-seat version has heaps of space and huge boot capacity.

You sit cocooned in sumptuous front chairs, like a lounge chair at home and there is plenty of room for everyone both front and back.

The main difference with the hybrid model is it’s got everything Jeep can throw into it and the hybrid engine.

It comes with a turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol engine combined with two electric motors and a 17.3-kilowatt hour battery. This is enough for around 50km of electric only power and after that hybrid economy. It does take a long time to charge at home though. So overnight is the aim.

Overall, the 4xe system delivers 280 kilowatts of combined power and 637Newton metres of combined torque. This drives through the famous Jeep 4WD system and an 8 speed automatic transmission.

At times you feel like you are riding on air its that smooth and quiet.

All this comes at a price though and that is $129,950 plus the usual costs.

Add to that the awesome 4WD capability of the Rubicon and its almost sitting alone. Perhaps the only Ute that comes close to it is the updated Toyota LandCruiser 70 series.

But what makes it so special.

Let’s start with the design parameters. The Rubicon is designed to be the best production 4WD Ute available.

It comes with the legendary Rock-Trac® on-demand 4×4 system 4:1 transfer case. Add to that locking front and rear diffs, disconnect able front sway bars, 249mm of ground clearance. Underneath there are standard heavy-duty Dana^® 44 front and rear solid axles, heavy duty high strength skid plates and massive wheel articulation as well.

More capability comes from an aggressive 40-degree approach angle and 25 degree departure. There is 760mm of water fording capability and heavy-duty tow hooks front and back if things go wrong.

The Gladiator Rubicon comes with a 3.6L petrol engine that has enough performance but is a little thirsty. A Gladiator hybrid version would be appreciated.

Inside its well appointed and comfortable. Lots of infotainment and technology as well as soft yet supportive seats that are also heated.

The Rubicon is priced from $87,250 plus the usual costs and you get a lot for that.

The Jeep was also the first car I ever drove when I was about 11 or so on the farm.

Fast forward to last week when I drove the Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. This latest version has the same basic core belief. That is, it can go almost anywhere.

Named after the famous Rubicon trail in the states the Wrangler has the awesome Rock-Trac on demand 11 4X4 system and an 8 Sp AT.  Jeep continues with the 3.6L petrol engine that has adequate performance but can be thirsty.

With a 4:1 low gear ratio, Tru-Lok^® electronic locking front and rear differentials, heavy duty front and rear Dana axles, 32 inch off road tyres and an electronic front sway bar disconnect, its about the best non modified 4WD you can get.

Inside, unlike the original, it’s a comfortable place to be. Heated front seats, U Connect infotainment system and a 9-speaker premium Alpine audio system all add to the ambience.

The four door Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon is priced from $90,450 plus the usual costs.

I drove the Overland model last week. Priced from a bit over $100,000 dollars plus the usual costs it’s getting up there in price. But it comes absolutely packed with safety and luxury features.

Inside its comfortable with heated front and outer rear seats. The model I drove also had an option pack that included front massage seats and I made good use of them.

There is a large 10 inch central touch screen for the Jeep U Connect system. Touch sensitivity is excellent and the level of control through the inbuilt apps it is almost mind boggling.

Other features include wireless smart phone connectivity and charging, large panoramic sunroof, and automatic LED headlights.

There is an electric version of the Jeep, but I drove the 3.6L V6 petrol version. It comes with Jeeps famous dual range 4WD capability, and an 8-speed automatic transmission.

It has enough performance to keep most people happy but can be a bit thirsty if pushed, especially around town.

Even though it has the Jeep 4WD capability, I don’t really see many going too deep into the bush. It’s more a luxury urban SUV that will find its home at the snow fields or towing the boat.

Overall, I enjoyed my time in the Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland.
