Full Size Ute – I’ve been driving a lot of Utes lately and it struck me just how many changes there have been in the segment.
There are now three different size classes in Utes. The traditional normal sized Utes like a Ranger HiLux or BT-50. The there is the American Pickup Trucks. These are certainly bigger and often difficult to navigate suburban car parks and tight inner city streets.
However, there is a new category the Full Size Ute. A perfect example of this is the FOTON Tunland. It’s bigger than a Ranger but smaller than a Ram In fact it’s like the Goldilocks of Utes.
The difference was apparent when I dropped a Tunland back that I had been driving for a few weeks and picked up a normal sized Ute. It doesn’t matter which brand as they are all similar in size.

The interior size difference is quite noticeable. There was a lot less seat slide and front leg room. The steering wheel felt a lot closer, as did my front seat passenger.
Rear leg room was almost non-existent.
Then there are the features. The Tunland has a large central screen, wireless charging tray, Heated and ventilated front seats and configurable drivers instrument dash.
The model I picked up was a mid-spec model and had none of those. It was also some $18,000 more expensive.
