Car sales results YTD August 2026

Car Sales – Australia’s vehicle market remained very strong in August, with Chinese manufacturers occupying half of the top 10 brands and demand for battery electric vehicles remaining at elevated levels. 

Overall sales for August were a touch above last year. The real difference has been in the elevated demand for battery electric vehicles.

For the first time ever EV sales were the dominant energy choice. This is on top of continuing growth in hybrid and PHEV sales.

New energy vehicles were a bit over half of all sales in August

Toyota remains the top brands with almost 20% market share.

They are followed by BYD, Kia, Ford and Mazda. The next five brands are Hyundai, GWM, Chery, MG and Mitsubishi.

Of the top ten models sold in August 3 were Utes and the rest were SUVs.

Chinese brands are certainly growing in popularity. The question remains is it sustainable. Some brands rely heavily on head office subsidies and bulk registrations. They do this for the NVES credits which are available for sale to other brands which are falling short of the ridiculous rules.

There also remains a larger debate over the convenience of EVs and the availability of electricity supply. Infrastructure also remains a limitation.

I have had a reasonable amount of feedback about buyers remorse after buying an EV and then realising it’s a completely different ownership experience.
