In short, each vehicle manufacturer must meet an increasingly restrictive average CO2 emission for its fleet or face penalties. This penalty will translate to higher prices for our vehicles.

The best way for manufacturers to meet the NVES targets is to sell a heap of Electric vehicles.

The problem is that buyers are showing they don’t want EVs.

Demand has dropped from almost 10% last year to 4% or recorded sales this year. Initial demand was met by early adopters and second wave buyers. Government agencies, large corporations, and some individual stragglers are the only people buying EVs.

EV’s make some sense for localised urban travel. The have zero driving emissions which helps pollution.

However, sales of Hybrids and PHEVs are booming. These vehicles make sense for the long distances Australians travel. They are convenient, economical and don’t restrict our lifestyles. FBT exemptions fuel demand for PHEVs..

The NVES legislation is yet another example of legislation where a government simply gets it wrong and is out of touch with everyday Australians.

In an event that had plenty of champagne flowing, they displayed their vision for the brand in Australia.

Zeekr revealed its highly anticipated Zeekr X, a luxury urban cross SUV. In addition, guests were also able to experience the Zeekr 009. A luxury pure EV MPV (Multi- Purpose Vehicle) ahead of its launch later in the year.

This will be available in wither a six or seven seat configuration, with a 450kW dual motor AWD powertrain and a host of other features.

Zeekr also has a number of popup locations across Australia over the next few months, to allow consumers to get a closer look and feel for the vehicles.

There is also the opportunity to win an exclusive six-month drive experience, with the winner announced on December 2nd, 2024. Terms and conditions apply.

For buyers that order their Zeekr before the 31^st October they will be able to charge their EVs free of charge through the Evie network across the country.

Zeekr revealed its highly anticipated Zeekr X, a luxury urban cross SUV, marking its official introduction to the Australian market. This vehicle exemplifies the future of mobility, seamlessly blending eco-conscious design with unrivalled performance and cutting-edge features.

Included in the preview, guests were also able to experience the 009, luxury pure EV MPV (Multi- Purpose Vehicle) ahead of its launch later in the year.

It’s a chunky yet cool looking SUV. Definitely aiming at the more adventurous buyers. Its also an innovative offer in the sub compact SUV class. That means its small and aimed at single or young couple buyers.

New design elements include special bumpers, skid plates, unique 17-inch alloy wheels, embossed black claddings, roof racks, and optional roof basket.

Hyundai has a slightly different interior, with all seats designed to fold flat. There is walk-through access in the front row, and 50/50 split second-row seats that can slide and recline.

INSTER Cross will have up to 360 kilometres of all-electric range. Hyundai says that the vehicle will be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in around 30 minutes.

Given the INSTER WLTP economy and the added features on the INSTER Cross, you could expect an  economy of around 16.0 kWh/100 km. We would obviously need to confirm that on driving.

Hyundai will reveal pricing closer to the launch.

I can see the INSTER Cross being popular with the stylish brigade and inner city runabout. It looks cool and that’s enough for most.

Cadillac has priced the LYRIQ Luxury variant from $117,000 and the Sport variant available from $119,000″. Plus, the usual costs.

The interior has a premium ambiance with a standout feature being the 33-inch LED screen that includes not only the drivers information, but the central infotainment and technology screen.

The LYRIQ comes with 388kW of power delivered via an all-wheel drive electric powertrain featuring a 102kWh battery capable of up to 530km between charges

All vehicles will come with an eight-year battery warranty and five years roadside assistance and warranty.

People will find it interesting to see how the market accepts the Cadillac LYRIQ. Other premium brands like Mecedes Benz, Genesis, Lexus and Audi are all experiencing difficulty in selling high end EV’s

We then headed up across the mountains to Bowral. An overnight stay then back to Sydney along the motorways.

This is what you may expect as typical weekend away in the EV5. As mentioned in a previous Motoring Minute the EV5 comes with an extended range battery that is good for between 400 and 555km depending on the model.

We drove three models. The front wheel drive Air with both the standard and extended range battery and the Earth with the extended range battery and AWD.

I have to say its now typical of what you expect from Kia. That is a stylish exterior and a comfortable, spacious and well-equipped interior.

Driving the EV5 is both pleasurable and peaceful. It’s quiet, with the only real noise coming from some wind and road noise on the entry model Air.

The instant torque is always a benefit for an EV. Its is engaging. Make no mistake, this isn’t a sports EV. It’s designed as an urban cruiser and weekend away style of SUV.

The Kia EV5 is jumping into what is becoming a crowded pool with any number of new Chinese brands playing in the same area. It will be interesting
