Snow driving tips – Its wintertime and for quite a few people their mind turns to snow season. I was asked last week, why are there so many Subarus in the snowy mountains. He also asked what vehicle I would recommend.

My answer wasn’t something he wasn’t expecting.

I said there are so many Subaru’s there because they are probably the best vehicle available for snowy and icy conditions. They are the only true 4WD. That is where all four wheels have continual drive sent to them all the time.

The Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system is perhaps the best 4WD available. Followed closely by Audi’s quattro system.

But they aren’t the only vehicles that I would take to the snow. Obviously, any Audi Quattro equipped model would be high on my choice list.

This would be followed by any model that has full time 4WD like a Land Rover or Toyota Prado, Kluger, LandCruiser. After that any dual range 4WD that allows shift on the fly changes that allows you to drive on bitumen in 4WD high. Then any dual range 4WD model.

Note that there are plenty of people that venture into the snow fields in 2WD vehicles. But honestly once you have to fit snow chains on the side of the road in the mud, sleet and rain. You will never want to do it again.

I have previously recorded a series of driving tips on motoringminute.com.au so head there to check them out

Quick tip highlights

Make sure your car is serviced, and everything is in good order. Extreme cold will find any problems very fast

Check your tyres. They are all that is providing grip for you when it gets bad

If needed fill up with Alpine diesel when you get closer to the snow fields. This has a higher freezing temperature.

If needed use antifreeze in your radiator

If you need to take snow chains practice with them before you go. The side of the road in freezing conditions isn’t the place to learn

When in the snow if you can, park facing slightly downhill

Leave your wipers up when parked

If you have snow covering your vehicle let your car idle for a while to heat up the windows. NEVER pour hot water on frozen glass.

Today we chat about snow driving tips.

Specialised winter tyres are made slightly differently to other tyres, they have a higher level of natural rubber, different tread patterns and tiny grooves to improve traction.

If you are spending 100% of your time in the snow then they may be worthwhile.

But they don’t last as well in normal conditions, that’s why they aren’t so popular in Australia with a short snow season.

An All Terrain tyre would be the best tyre. All terrain tyres have similar qualities to winter tyres and are better for the 95% of your time spent under normal conditions.

As with all tyres there is a lot of choice even in all terrains. There are more road-based styles and others with more aggressive deeper treads and side lugs.

For my Pajero I chose Bridgestone Dueler A/T D697 LT. These are a great balance between majority road based use, some heavy duty off road work and the occasional snow trip.

They have deep tread to clear the snow with groves for better traction. All terrain tyres have a high rubber content. While compliant they are heavily cut and chip resistant.

Even with the best tyres though, driving in the snow can be dangerous so always be careful
