EV Sales – With the latest new car sales results there has been an Interesting development. That is in April EV sales surged. The months sales were about 16% of the total.

For the YTD EV sales are around 13% of sales. I still believe that at year end they will be 9-10%

This surge is driven by three factors.

Higher petrol pricing simply because successive Australian governments have failed to secure adequate supplies of local refined fuel.

Continued government incentives for EV purchases with the electric car discount

The ridiculous NVES legislation starting to penalise and affect manufacturers.

All three of these factors show extremely poor government policy, that ultimately you and I, the taxpayers will pay for.

Currently there are around 110 EV models available for sale. With more brands and models joining almost every month.

The problem with increased EV sales is everything that revolves around that.

Yes, EV have zero localised driving emissions. However, to produce them they are worse that normal vehicles.

Also increased EVs mean more charging infrastructure is needed, and Australia is lagging in that respect. Our vast distances will always be a problem. Inner city is a different issue.

On top of that charging cars consumes electricity at a rate that is frightening.

Given the increasing reliance of wind and solar power, Australia is incapable of meeting that demand.

As usual successive governments have proven to be short sighted in their policy making and again we the taxpayer will be affected.

This is a Motoring Minute

Of these Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice followed by diesel then hybrids and PHEVs. Then EVs. However, they accounted for around 17% of sales for April, which is about double what was expected.

SUVs continue their surge in popularity with 8 of the top ten models. The other two were Utes.

Toyota remains the dominant brand with slightly under 16% but that is down from 20% last year.

They are followed by Mazda, Kia, Ford and BYD. The next top five brands are Hyundai, GWM, Mitsubishi, Chery and MG.

Going back even five years, few would have picked that brand makeup.

It seems that almost every month there is a new Chinese brand making its debut in Australia. With them they bring even more EVs, hybrid and PHEVs.

We seem to be the testing ground for models at times. Or some would say the dumping ground.

However, my now long forgotten economics degree tells me that when you increase supply and demand remains fairly constant, something has to happen. That will either be better pricing, some established brands disappearing. Ot even worse some new brands are here today and gone tomorrow.

There are interesting times ahead.

This is a motoring Minute.

The new car sales results for March have been released. Not surprisingly there has been an increase in electric vehicle sales with the current temporary fuel pricing issues.

Overall, 108,103 vehicle sales were recorded in March 2026, which is slightly lower than last year.

Petrol remained the dominant fuel choice followed by diesel. Hybrid and PHEV sales continue to grow. Electric vehicle sales almost doubled in March compared to last year. YTD they are around 10% of sales.

The surge can be attributed to changes to a review of the FBT rules and surging petrol prices. However I feel that many buyers will have buyer regret down the track for reacting to short term influences.

SUVs continue their seemingly unstoppable growth followed by LCV which includes Utes and delivery vans.

Passenger car sales continue to decline, but there may be hope yet with a umber of manufacturers introducing new models into the segment.

Of the top ten models sold in March 3 were Utes, and the rest were SUVs.

Toyota remains the dominant brand with double the sales of number two brand Mazda, However they are 20% down on last year.

Kia, Ford and Hyundai make up the top five brands.

The next five are BYD, GWM, Mitsubishi, Chery and MG

This brand mix would be unthinkable even three years ago.

The new car sales results for the YTD September have been released. There were 101,992 new cars delivered. This brings the YTD total to a bit under 940,000.

These figures see the China influence growing, especially in the BEV sector.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel source followed by diesel.

These two account for about 70 % of sales. Hybrid and PHEVs account for about 20% of sales Pure EV’s account for about 8% of YTD sales.

The growth in SUV’s continues with that sector being about 60% of the total. LCV including Utes and Vans represent about 23% of the total. Passenger cars continue to decline in popularity.

Toyota retains the top position, followed by Ford, Mazda, Kia, and Hyundai. The next five are where the Chinese brands are making inroads. They are Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, MG and Isuzu Ute.

Of the top ten sales in September three were Utes, and the rest were SUVs. Underneath this is a tale of two Utes. The BYD Shark 6 has quickly grown to a bit under 9% market share in the segment. While the Kia Tasman so far has failed to spark buyer desires.

What these figures show is that despite the draconian NVES legislation trying to force buyers into more EVs by imposing penalties on manufacturers, and that there are over 100 EV and 50 PHEV models available. Buyers don’t want pure EVs. Hybrids are by far more popular and practical.

Again, it shows just how out of touch the government is with everyday car buyers’ preferences.

New Car Sales – The new car sales results for the first half of the year have been released. All up there have been a touch over 600,000 sales so far. Given the economic climate this is a good result.

There are a couple of interesting trends. The first is that the true effect of the punitive NVES legislation hasn’t come into play yet.

Second is that Australians still love their Utes with the top four vehicles reported sold for June being Utes. Along side that the love affair with SUVs continues with the remaining 6 vehicles being from that category.

Next is the continuing emergence of mainstream Chinese brands. GWM, BYD and MG are all in the top ten brands.

Pure EV sales continue to decline and now sit at about 6% of total sales. Hybrids and PHEVs on the other hand continue to grow and with about 20% of total sales.

Toyota remains the dominant brand with a touch under 20% market share. Mazda, Ford, Kia, and Hyundai follow them. The next top five brands reflect changing consumer behaviour, They are Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, Isuzu Ute and MG.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice followed by diesel then Hybrids.

SUVs also remain the dominant choice with about 60% of sales, followed by LCVs which includes Utes. Then passenger cars, which are declining every month.

Now that the draconian NVES penalties will apply from July 1 I think that the year-end results will reflect a different mix of vehicles.

This is a Motoring Minute

The new car sales results for the YTD May have been released. A total of 105,285 vehicles were delivered for the month.

This is down on last year but still up on 2023 figures.

SUVs remain the dominant class with over 60% of sales. Light commercial vehicles, Utes and vans, were next with 22%, passenger cars with 13.5% and heavy trucks make up the rest.

Of the top ten selling vehicles, three were Utes and the rest were SUVs. Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger continue their seesawing for the top spot with HiLux taking the honours for May.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel source with 41 % . Diesel is second with 30%. Electric cars are less than 5 % of sales. All these are trending down, and the growth is in Hybrids and PHEVs. They now represent 20% of total sales.

Toyota remains number one with over 20% market share. Mazda, Ford Kia, and Hyundai follow them. The next five spots go to Mitsubishi, Nissan GWM, MG, and Isuzu Ute.

Another interesting trend is that China has become the third largest manufacturer of vehicles sold in Australia after Japan and Thailand.

It seems that new Chinese brands are popping up all the time. However, the ones that are establishing a strong presence here like BYD, GWM and MG, have hybrids as part of their product range.

The new car sales results for the YTD ending April 2025 have been released. These show a decrease of a bit under 7% on last year. However, they are still a bit higher than 2023 which was a more normal year.

Once again Toyota was the top selling brand followed by Mazda, Ford, Kia, and Hyundai. The next top spots went to Mitsubishi, GWM, MG, Nissan, and Isuzu Ute. With Subaru sitting just outside the top ten.

SUVs remain the dominant market choice now accounting for 60% of sales. Of the top ten models sold in April, three were Utes, 6 were SUVs and one passenger car.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice followed by diesel. Then the combination of hybrid and PHEV is growing. EVs are still sluggish. Hybrids are the growth segment with more buyers choosing them for the economy and convenience combination.

PHEVs had a decline partly due to the change in FBT exemption availability. An example of misguided government changes.

Total EV sales for the YTD are around 4.6% of total reported sales. This again shows just how out of touch the Government NVES legislation is with everyday consumer behaviour.

This is also a global phenomenon with EV sales slowing almost everywhere.

This is a Motoring Minute

The latest new car sales figures have been released for March. They show a slight pickup but just below the record from last year.

In total there were 108,606 sales for the month.

SUVs remain the dominant segment with around 60%, LCV next with about 22%, and passenger cars a bit under 13%.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice at 40% followed by Diesel at 30%. The big move has come from hybrid and PHEV vehicles that now account for about 22%. EVs have plunged to about 5% of recorded sales.

In fact, EVs account for only 4% of total reported sales year-to-date. This shows just how out of touch the governments NVES are to the buying demand.

Toyota was the top brand with about 20% of sales. Followed by Mazda, Ford, Kia, and Mitsubishi. The next top five brands are Hyundai, GWM, MG, Nissan, and Subaru.

Four of the top ten models sold were Utes, but with a shift towards PHEV with the BYD Shark 6 coming from nowhere to be top ten this month.

The automotive landscape is rapidly changing this year with so many new brands entering the market.

More brands, more choice in a stable market will see some brands disappear and some have their market share dissipated.

I’m glad I’m a casual observer and not responsible for a brand. It must be stressful.

The new car sales result for February 2025 have been released. 94,993 new vehicles were delivered in the month.. This is a 9.6% decline for the same month last year.

So far this year there have been just under 182,000 vehicles delivered.

There are two key issues with these figures. First is the declining sales as cost-of-living pressures really start to bite hard at consumers.

The second is just how out of touch with reality is the Governments NVES legislation.

They are pushing battery electric vehicles and imposing draconian penalties on brands that don’t meet their targets.

However, while there are any number on new brands and EV models available. Sales have collapsed to less than 6% of the total. This is a drop of 37% for the YTD from last year.

In contrast the sales of Hybrids and PHEVs continue to grow.

Toyota is the leading brand followed by Mazda, Kia, Ford and Mitsubishi. Followed by Hyundai, MG, GWM Nissan and Subaru.

SUV sales are now about 60.4% of sales, LCVs another 22.5%. Passenger car sales continue to decline with just 13.5% of total sales. Trucks make up the difference.

This is a Motoring Minute
