Toyota has come late to the party with the Tundra but there are two models available. The Limited and the Platinum.

First impressions is that the Tundra has a subtle sleek design. It doesn’t look as big as it is. Lots of people walking past gave me the thumbs up for the styling.

Inside it has all the space you expect from this size pickup.

Bit there is something different about it. It immediately feels familiar, and it just fits right. Like a favourite pair of jeans. The front seats are especially comfortable and have perhaps the best seat heaters available.

The central screen is large and has excellent resolution. There are a couple of things that carry over from the LD to RHD conversion. The central locking works on the passenger door, the A/C syncs from the left-hand control and Apple CarPlay controls are on the far-left side of the screen.

It obviously has plenty of performance from its 3.5L V6 Twin Turbo hybrid petrol engine. But again, the smoothness in delivery feels different. It also has better ride and handling than I expected.

So overall I’ve become a big fan of the Tundra. Priced from $155.900 plus the usual costs it is expensive though.

Externally, the Tundra Platinum provides an even bolder, more distinctive look.

With the new grade featuring:

• chrome-plated mesh-style front grille and side door trim,
• black tailgate handles and window surrounds,
• and black 20-inch alloy wheels.

Inside it adds:

• black and blue leather-accented upholstery
• 10-way power adjustment for the front passenger seat and
• four-way power lumbar support for both front seats.
• Front seat massaging function,
• rear outboard passengers gain seat heating and ventilation.
• Heated steering wheel and more.

With a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 i-FORCE MAX which produces 290kW/649Nm from its petrol engine and 36kW/250Nm from the electric motor for a combined output of 326kW/790Nm. This combines with 4WD and a 10-speed automatic transmission allowing it to tow 4500 kg.

It’s the most powerful Toyota offered in Australia.

All this comes at a price of $172,990 plus on-road costs. That’s starting to get expensive.

The Platinum is available from May.

There are three main segments, the 1500 sized vehicles which are overwhelmingly the most popular. Then the 2500 and 3500 sized vehicles that seem to be more specific to buyers that have heavy towing needs.

Well, if we go back 10 years, they were not so prevalent. There were a few private businesses that  imported these and did conversions like Harrison F Trucks and Performax.

Them RAM started bringing in factory backed models and the segment seemed to explode. They were everywhere and had an almost monopoly on sales.

However, in recent years Chevrolet has brought their Silverado models here though the GM Speciality Vehicles distributor and they have matched RAM sales in very short time.

Ford has joined the party with their F150, but they have had  few teething issues that hasn’t slowed sales too much. And just this year Toyota has dipped their toe in the water with a limited release of the hybrid Tundra model.

Its easy to see why they are becoming more popular. They offer just as much luxury, safety and comfort as the top 4WDs like the LandCruiser, Defender and Patrol. But have more interior room and unmatched towing and payload capacity.

The first model, the Limited will be available from November 2024 with a premium version available mid-2025.

The Tundra joins the RAM 1500, Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F150 as the local market embraces the larger American Pickup style Utes.

Walkinshaw Automotive Group is the specialist doing the conversion. They also do a number of other local conversion vehicles. Its not just a swap from left to right hand drive, more a complete reengineering process.

Both versions sit on the same platform that underpins the LC 300 series. The Tundra’s engine is a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 i-FORCE MAX powertrain. This generates 326kW of power and 790Nm of torque and drives through a 10-speed automatic transmission.

A part-time 4WD system with a dual-range transfer case drives the Tundra and it and offers a huge 4.5-tonne braked towing capacity¹.

Like all the medium sized Pickup trucks the Tundra will bring both space and luxury to buyers.

Most listeners will know I am a big 4WD fan, but I have a confession to make.

I love BIG American style Pickup trucks. I love almost everything about them. They are big, usually with powerful V8 engines, huge interior space, massive tub capacity and can tow up to 4500kg with ease.

There simply aren’t any other vehicles that will seat 5 people my size in comfort. I can sit behind myself in the driver seat and my knees don’t even touch the seatback. There is plenty of head room and I have sat in the back of a few of them for hours on end in comfort.

Over the last few weeks, I have driven a couple of RAM 1500 models. And yes, I am a big fan. But it isn’t only them. I love the Ford F150, Chev Silverado 1500, and the Toyota Tundra. And if Nissan brought the Titan here, I would love that as well.

There is a downside though. Suburban car parks are a worry and sometimes its difficult to fit in the tiny spaces allocated, That’s a small price to pay.

Also, when you compare the price to other premium 4WDs and SUVs they are similar and in many cases there is no comparison for features and performance.
