The Nissan Patrol has always been a capable 4WD but has been aimed more at luxury cruiser of late.

It looks big and bulky, and it is.

Inside there is plenty of space. The front seat slide could be a little tight for very tall drivers, but the middle row seats have plenty or room.

Third row seats are also reasonably roomy.

The Patrol is also exceptionally comfortable. You feel cocooned inside, its quiet and smooth, and you feel like you’re sitting in a lounge chair.

The Patrol is now an old design, but with the locally upgraded infotainment system and redesigned central stack, it is more functional and looks better.

The 5.8 litre V8 Sounds awesome and provides plenty or performance. But this comes at the expense of fuel economy. Around town I was getting a little under 20 litres per 100 kilometres.

The steering is especially light, which is great for tight suburban carparks, but not so much on the open road.

One good thing about the Patrol TI=L is the price. It costs a little over $100,000 plus the usual costs and against the competition that’s sensational value.

Having driven these Utes a few times now , every time I’m impressed.

The Navara Warrior is part of a three model Warrior range from the joint development between Nissan NS Premcar.

The Premcar facilities in Epping Victoria were equally impressive. The attention to detail and efficiency of the production line to fit the Warrior enhancements and relaxed yet focused work environment is remarkable.

The Warrior additions transform a good 4WD Ute into an excellent 4WD Ute. I’ve said many times its not so much what it can do or where it can go. Its more the ability to do those things with such composure and ease that makes the difference.

As 4WD Utes become more popular, packages like this Ute make a lot of sense. Many buyers will happily go straight from the show room to an aftermarket outlet and add a heap of accessories. These are all good products in isolation, but sometimes don’t work as well together as they could.

An integrated upgrade like the Warrior means that the engineering is all done taking into account the overall effect, but just the individual accessory. They also come with a full manufacturers warranty and that’s comforting.

The Nissan Navara Pro 4X Warrior is priced from $71,265 plus the usual costs and that’s pretty good value

They have also become more expensive.

In fact, one of the most popular Utes now actually costs almost $90,000 plus the usual costs. The Ford Ranger Raptor sits in its own little category with performance that rivals the bigger American style Pickup V8 trucks, but in the smaller Dual Cab style.

Ranger and Toyota HiLux are often head-to-head for the most popular Ute and in fact vehicle sold.

Toyota HiLux GR Sport and Rogue are two special build models that are looking to tap into the buyer’s mindset of wanting more.

Ford Ranger has the Wildtrak and Platinum. VW Amarok comes in the Adventrura.

There are of course the Isuzu D-Max X Terrain and Mazda BT-50 SP and Thunder,  both which are excellent Utes but starting to show their age a bit now.

Mitsubishi has just released the all new Triton and it’s a beauty. It sits firmly in the middle ground with a heap of features and capability for  a reasonable price. The GSR model is the premium offer.

We must also mention the Nissan Navara and their Warrior models which bring enhanced capability with manufacturer warranty.

Yes, buyers the choices of premium 4WD Ute is growing as are the prices.

First released in late 2019 the Navara Warrior has been quite successful. For good reason.

The Warrior comes equipped with several popular additions that buyers often add after market. However, the benefit of the Pro-4X Warrior is that these are fully integrated in a way that they all work together and backed by Nissan manufacturer warranty.

The Pro-4X Warrior comes with raised suspension, All terrain off road tyres and alloy wheels, integrated front bar with light bar and heavy duty frontal skid plate. At the rear is an integrated tow bar, specialised spare wheel carrier.

There is of course the usual cosmetic additions to make it stand out. The latest version now has electronic adjustment for the driver’s seat including lumbar support.  The seats are particularly comfortable.

As I have mentioned before the Warrior hits that sweet spot between additional  off road capability along with improved on road ride and handling dynamics. Its not that it will go places other 4WD Utes cant, its more that it does it with more control and ease, which in turn is better for the vehicle and driver.

The Nissan Navara Pro-4X Warrior is priced from a bit over $68,000 plus the usual cists for the 6 Sp manual version.

The LS-U+ comes with the robust and reliable 3.0L 4 cylinder turbo diesel engine with 140kW of power and a well-used 450Nm of torque from as low as 1600rpm. There is some 350Nm available from as low as 1200rpm.

This is matched to the 6 Sp automatic transmission.

Off road credentials come from the 4WD Terrain command subsystem that allows switching between 2wd and 4wd at speed up to 100kmh. 800MM of wading depth and standard rear diff locks.

Little features like leather highlighted and heated front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity and a full suite of safety features all make the D-Max appealing.

The tub comes lined with a heavy-duty plastic insert and a roll top cover. A clever and appreciated addition this year is the gas Tailgate assist for opening and closing. I have mixed feelings about the roll top cover. Its safe and convenient but does limit load capacity.

I put the D-Max to good use carting a few loads of mulch and garden sleepers for my yard.

Its an ideal all round vehicle.  Enough comfort and safety features to keep owners happy. Excellent towing and 4WD capability and frugal with fuel as well.

The Isuzu D-Max LS-U+ is priced from $63,500 plus the usual costs.

  • Configurable MFD between dials on the drivers instruments
• Not a fan of the windscreen washers in the wiper arms
• Also not a fan of the roll top on the tub. Its takes up space and has to be opened fully to close it again. Not the best when its raining.
• Like a lot of tubs, reaching the front middle section is difficult, especially with the roll top.

I’ve said it many times. The D-Max is a robust, reliable and practical 4WD Ute.

The LS-U+ is perhaps the best value version. It has a few extra features for comfort without the bling of the X-Terrain. It would pay to check the drive away deals on the X-Terrain though

The D-Max will tow 3500kg with ease, go anywhere you will sensibly want to go off road and do it in comfort. All D-Max vehicles come with the tow assembly installed. All you have to do is add the hitch tongue you want.

Isuzu D-Max LS-U+ is a favourite Ute of mine.

Nonetheless its well-equipped and comfortable. It also comes with seven seats which proved a bonus at the wedding. It comfortably transported the groom, his three groomsman and a driver to the wedding. They all arrived in pristine condition.

The Sahara comes with heated and ventilated front seats as well as the outer middle row seats. The third row seats are power operated as is the tailgate. For the driver there is a bright Head up display. Infotainment includes twin rear head rest screens, which seems dated these days.

Overall it’s a comfortable and relatively spacious family 4WD Wagon.

Otherwise, the Sahara has the same 3.3L Twin Turbo V6 diesel engine that has power of 227kW at 4000rpm and torque of 700Nm available from 1600-2600rpm. This drives a permanent 4WD system through a smooth 10 speed automatic transmission.
