There are two models for 2025. The Laramie Sport and the upmarket Limited.

There are still vehicles available from the previous model across dealerships if you definitely want the 5.7L Hemi V8.

However, the new 3.0L turbo straight six engine has more power and torque and better economy. Just not the delicious V8 burble.

MY25 Ram 1500 has two versions of the new engine. The standard output has outputs of 313kW and 635Nm. This is 7.6 per cent more power and 14.2 per cent more torque than the 5.7-litre Hemi V8.

The second version, a high output version in the Limited produces 403kW and 707Nm. That is substantially more than the V8.

Both models also receive a lengthy list of comfort and styling upgrades. These include power tailgates, 14.4-inch infotainment screen, along with a 10.25-inch passenger screen.

There are also some important safety upgrades as well.

Pricing for the 2025 Laramie Sport starts at $141,950. The Limited starts at $159,950. Both are plus the usual costs.

With HEMI V8 engine production ending in the US for RAM 1500 DT trucks. It marks the end of a production run that can trace its roots back to 1951.

The latest versions have that distinctive and addictive V8 burble. They produce some 291kW  of power and 556Nm of torque.

Owners can tow up to 4500 kg, depending on which model is chosen.

A HEMI V8 engine is so called thanks to the shape of the cylinder head’s combustion chamber. A scooped out half circle or hemisphere, which allowed the spark plugs to be positioned closer. To shorten the burn distance of the air/fuel mixture.

This unique hemisphere shape meant domed pistons were used to produce sufficient compression. Which allowed for an increase in engine power.

I am a big fan of this motor, its so easy to live with. Except of course the fuel economy, but they also have variable cylinder use so that its surprisingly economical on the freeway.

For the price of a top spec LandCruiser or Defender. You can have a RAM 1500 Pickup truck in one of four models. And a bit of nostalgia with the Hemi V8.

There are three main segments of American Pickup. The 1500 sized vehicles which are overwhelmingly the most popular. Then the 2500 and 3500 sized vehicles that seem to be more specific to buyers that have heavy towing needs.

Well, if we go back 10 years, they were not so prevalent. There were a few private businesses that  imported these and did conversions like Harrison F Trucks and Performax.

Them RAM started bringing in factory backed models and the segment seemed to explode. They were everywhere and had an almost monopoly on sales.

However, in recent years Chevrolet has brought their Silverado models here though the GM Speciality Vehicles distributor and they have matched RAM sales in very short time.

Ford has joined the party with their F150, but they have had  few teething issues that hasn’t slowed sales too much. And just this year Toyota has dipped their toe in the water with a limited release of the hybrid Tundra model.

Its easy to see why they are becoming more popular. They offer just as much luxury, safety and comfort as the top 4WDs like the LandCruiser, Defender and Patrol. But have more interior room and unmatched towing and payload capacity.

The weight of this truck is about 3000kg. It’s a monster. A monster that will go from 0-100KM/h in about 4.5 seconds. It will also tow 3500kg and go off road when you want.

Of course it comes with just about every luxury , safety and comfort feature Ram Trucks can jam in there. It will put a lot of large premium 4WDs and SUVs to shame in that department.

As it will when asked to seat five tall occupants, which the others can only dream of.

All this performance and capability does come at a price though. THE TRX will drink fuel at an astonishing rate. I got it down to about 18L/100K on the motorway and averaged about 21L/100K overall. Don’t even ask what its like when you bury the right foot or drive on sand.

The RAM 1500 TRX is priced from around $225,000 plus the usual costs and I absolutely love it. There is nothing else like it in Australia.

The RAM 1500 Big Horn is now the entry level for the DT model. It comes with a choice of two cargo tub lengths. One with a 5’7” tub, which I drove, and the other with a 6’3” tub.

Pricing starts around the $120,000 mark plus the usual costs.

Being the new entry model, it has a lot less features than the Laramie Sport I drove a few weeks ago. But it is still surprisingly well equipped, the main difference is a smaller central screen and fabric seats.

It has the same cavernous interior with room for five adults in comfort.

The RAM Big Horn comes with the legendary 5.7-litre V8 HEMI^® engine, delivering 291kW OF power and 556Nm of torque through a silky-smooth 8-speed gearbox. The transmission dial is mounted on the front dash to the left of the steering wheel.

The big news is the handy 4.5T towing capacity. This is the work Truck that will prove popular with many buyers.

It comes with push button 4WD select functionality. As with the Laramie Sport, the Big Horn isn’t designed for tight rocky 4WD tracks in standard format. However, it’s awesome on outback trails, and forest roads. I took onto my local beach, and it was effortless.

As an outback touring vehicle towing a big van its hard to beat.

Most listeners will know I am a big 4WD fan, but I have a confession to make.

I love BIG American style Pickup trucks. I love almost everything about them. They are big, usually with powerful V8 engines, huge interior space, massive tub capacity and can tow up to 4500kg with ease.

There simply aren’t any other vehicles that will seat 5 people my size in comfort. I can sit behind myself in the driver seat and my knees don’t even touch the seatback. There is plenty of head room and I have sat in the back of a few of them for hours on end in comfort.

Over the last few weeks, I have driven a couple of RAM 1500 models. And yes, I am a big fan. But it isn’t only them. I love the Ford F150, Chev Silverado 1500, and the Toyota Tundra. And if Nissan brought the Titan here, I would love that as well.

There is a downside though. Suburban car parks are a worry and sometimes its difficult to fit in the tiny spaces allocated, That’s a small price to pay.

Also, when you compare the price to other premium 4WDs and SUVs they are similar and in many cases there is no comparison for features and performance.

All RAM 1500 pickup trucks are powered by the 5.7-litre V8 HEMI® engine, delivering 291kW and 556Nm through a silky-smooth 8-speed gearbox. This now comes with eTorque technology creating a mild hybrid system for better fuel economy. It wasn’t too bad. We got it down to around 10L/100 on the motorway and around 13l/100k in the urban areas.

The RAM also comes with a dual range 4WD system and up to 4.5T towing capacity.

As an outback touring or towing vehicle there is a lot of plus points for this truck. Its also well priced against some more traditional 4WD at $136,950 plus the usual costs.

The RAM 1500 Laramie Sport is a different choice for buyers rather than a LandCruiser, Defender or Patrol
