Firstly, I really like the styling. Somehow, Kia has managed to make a large SUV look sleek rather than bulky. I’m also a fan of the interior design and overall ambience. Everything is well laid out and feels premium. One small gripe is that the air-conditioning controls sit within the large central touchscreen and can be a little awkward to use. That said, the 25-inch display itself is impressive.

There are some clever design touches too, like the front sunshades with a slide-out section that offers extra protection when pulled to the side. The wireless charging tray means no cables cluttering up the cabin, and wireless smartphone connectivity makes staying connected easy. Dual-zone climate control also allows me to keep bub at a comfortable temperature, which every mum will appreciate.

My music taste has definitely shifted from my usual playlists to a steady stream of nursery rhymes, but I still love the premium BOSE sound system — and so does bub.

Priced from around $86,000 plus on-road costs, the Sorento GT-Line PHEV is expensive — about $12,000 more than the regular hybrid, which I would choose.

Aside from the price, the Kia Sorento GT-Line PHEV AWD gets the mum-and-bub approval.

 The Kia Sorento comes with a five-star ANCAP safety rating, which is reassuring when your precious bub is on board. That peace of mind really matters.

One feature I especially like is the 360-degree camera system. Suburban car parks can be tight, and it makes reversing much easier. The digital centre mirror is another standout — even when the boot is packed full of baby gear, I can still clearly see what’s behind me.

Blind spots are always a concern, and with blind-spot monitoring and blind-spot collision-avoidance, I’m alerted if I’ve missed something. There are curtain airbags covering the first and second rows, although not the third row.

New mums are often tired, so I appreciate the little things that quietly help without needing extra thought. If it rains, the wipers activate. When it gets dark, the headlights come on. The large head-up display keeps important information right in my line of sight, helping me stay focused on the road.

The front seats are particularly comfortable and supportive, with heating and cooling. When I’m in the back seat with bub, there are USB ports for convenience, and rear pull-up sunshades.

Legroom can feel a little tight when sitting beside bub, but there’s plenty of headroom.

Overall, the Kia Sorento GT-Line gets a big tick from mum and bub for safety.

PHEV stands for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, which allows drivers to use it as a fully electric SUV for short trips, up to 50 kilometres. Once the battery is depleted, it operates like a normal hybrid.

The top-spec model offers seven seats and packs numerous features. I’ve always enjoyed the Sorento as a family SUV — it’s well thought out and very easy to live with.

Installing the baby seat was straightforward, with ISOFIX and top tether points, and doors that open wide enough to make access easy. What did stand out, though, was just how much space a baby seat takes up. With it installed, rear-seat room felt a little tight.

As a five-seater, there’s plenty of boot space for all the baby gear. However, if you need to use all seven seats, luggage space becomes very limited — something mums will definitely want to factor in.

Around town, the Sorento is easy and comfortable to drive. The 1.6-litre petrol hybrid engine feels smooth and economical.

With an EV only range of about 50k  it’s a bit impractical. Having recently driven the regular hybrid Sorento, I actually prefer that option — it’s simpler to live with and more affordable too.

I had the Sorento GT-Line all wheel drive hybrid electric vehicle.

This is the top spec model that comes equipped with everything you could possibly want in terms of comfort, safety and luxury features. It also looks quite smart with the design refresh last year.

Priced from around $73,300 plus the usual costs the Sorento Hybrid GT-Line is actually great value.

I really like the huge screen that seems to flow from in front of the driver through to the central stack area. Its clear and easy to read.  Especially the reverse camera.

Other features I Like are the exceptionally comfortable front seats. Heated, ventilated and supportive.

Middle row seats are great for taller people, but the third row is really for early teens. There are five top tether and 4 isofix Child Restraint Anchorage Points. The flexibility of rear folding seats is another plus point.

The 1,6 litre hybrid petrol engine has enough performance for most drivers and is particularly economical. I averaged around 6.5 litres per hundred kilometres for the time I was driving. With a new dial transmission, it takes a little getting used to but works well when you do.

Its easy to see why the Sorento is so popular with families. It is so easy to live with.

The Sorento has long been a favourite SUV of mine. In fact, not so long ago I drove the normal hybrid version.

Being the GT- Line means that it is absolutely packed with luxury, comfort and safety features. Kia does a great job with those.

The Plug in hybrid model has a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a small electric motor and battery. This combination allows for enough performance to keep the Sorento moving easily.

However, the small EV Only range of around 50km is a bit short for daily driving. It means that you most likely will need to charge every night for it to be useful.

For new families there are isofix and top tether points for baby seats and the boot is large enough with the rear seats folded, for all the gear you need. Rear seats have plenty of leg and knee room for adults and baby seats. The rear seats are best left for shorter occupants.

The main issue I have with the Plug in Hybrid model is that it costs from $84,660 dollars plus the usual costs. That is some $11,500 dollars more expensive than the normal hybrid model, which is really good, and I just can’t see the value.

This vehicle is specifically designed for family transport  around the city. Being the GT-Line it is fully equipped with everything Kia can fit in there including:

• Heated and ventilated front seats
• Heated rear outer seats
• Digital rear view mirror and
• Bose surround audio system

Its especially comfortable inside and with the large expanse of screens, the driver has all the information they need at their fingertips

There is also a 10-inch Head up display above the thick rimmed steering wheel. Although this does polarise out with sunglasses on.

The real story is the 1.6 litre petrol hybrid engine. It has reasonable performance and excellent economy. I averaged around 6.5 litres per 100 kilometres for the week. Not bad for a large SUV.

The latest generation was launched in 2020 and received an upgrade early this year.

The Sorento comes in a four-model range and a number of engine choices. Models are the S, Sport, Sport + and the GT-Line

There is a 3.5 litre petrol, version in all four models and comes in front wheel drive only with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The familiar 2.2 litre turbo diesel comes in all four models and all-wheel drive only along with an eight speed DCT.

There is also the 1.6L Hybrid engine that comes in the GT-Line in both front wheel drive and all-wheel drive. The PHEV is coming soon.

The updated styling makes the Sorento look even better. Inside the GT-Line ambience is excellent. It’s comfortable, spacious and quiet.

I love the 12.5-inch central touch screen and the huge digital instrument cluster. Also, on those cold winter morning the heated seats are much appreciated.

My favourite version of the Sorento is the diesel GT-Line but I could be tempted by the hybrid GT-Line in all wheel drive.

There is a reason the Kia Sorento is popular, That’s because its exceptionally good.

Released to coincide with their sponsorship of the Kia Australian Open, the updated Sorento has several comfort, safety, and ride upgrades.

The Sorento comes in choice of either a FWD Petrol with an 8 Sp AT or AWD diesel with an 8 Sp DCT.

There has been a mild exterior redesign to now look more like the Stunning EV9, with some new exterior colours to choose from.

The Sorento has always been amongst the best in class for ride and handling, but now comes with a revised suspension tune from engineering guru Graeme Gambold. The latest model feels tighter, and more responsive with selective damping depending on road conditions.

You can feel the differentiation between body control and ride comfort.  It will put many lower priced European SUVs to shame in its class.

The other main area of improvement is in infotainment and connectivity. There is a larger 12.3 inch curved central screen, like the EV9, with OTA upgrades, and a clever Kia Connect App that allows some remote functionality depending on the model.

All models also now come with a dial transmission which tidies up the interior.

Kia Sorento is priced from $50,680 through to $68,590 for the AWD GT Line version and that is stunning value.
