The first thing you notice is its striking design. For a large SUV, and it is large, is the elegance of the styling. It somehow manages to hide its bulk with clever and sleek  lines.

The EV9 Air comes with a 76.1 kilowatt hour battery that provides 160 kilowatt of power and 350 Newton Metres of torque. This drives the rear wheels through a one speed reduction transmission.

With a low centre of gravity and rear wheel drive its fun to drive. The biggest problem is that the EV9 Air weighs some 2300kg and that tends to dull the responsiveness. The other issue is that real life range is about 420km maximum. Charging at home takes a while as well.

Inside the first thing you notice is the space. Its cavernous inside. The drivers’ seats are particularly comfortable. In front of the driver is the wide screens that have become a Kia feature.

The middle row seats have a slide function as well as the ability to fold flat. They also have two isofix and top tether points for baby seats.

The boot is large, but I do wish there was a five seat version for even more room.

Pricing is from $97,000 plus the usual costs and that’s expensive.

There is no mistaking the EV9. It’s a stunning design and people everywhere I took it stopped to look and chat.

The EV9 GT-Line comes with a 99.8 kilowatt hour battery that is good for about 500km. It comes with drive to all four wheels and a one speed reduction gear transmission.

For such a big car, and it is big, its surprisingly nimble and responsive. Its over 5 metres in length and over 2600kg in weight. But it doesn’t feel that big when driving. It certainly feels connected to the road. Its also whisper quiet to drive.

That size makes for a spacious interior. The front seats are especially comfortable with heating and cooling and electronic adjustments.  The dash and central screen is huge and dominates the interior.

I love the interior ambience. It has a premium feel that would be at home on any of the top European brands. I also like the Kia process of using as much sustainable materials as possible in the manufacturing process.

Overall, the EV9 is simply stunning in every aspect.

The likes of Mercedes Benz, BMW , Volvo, and Audi should be looking closely at this EV.

And at a price of only $121,000 plus the usual costs its actually great value compared to what you can get in premium brands.

The EV9 is engaging to drive with substantial performance and the suspension tuning for Australian conditions is spot on. It feels firmly planted to the road and the hefty 2600kg weight helps. Given that weight, the 0-100km/h time for the AWD GT-Line of 5.3 seconds is impressive.

You expect electric cars to be quiet. But not this quiet. There is almost no exterior road or traffic noise that invades the cabin.

Kia has excelled with the EV9. It has a level of intelligent convenience that cars twice its price aspire to.

My first impression is that the EV9 is stunning.

Stunning in styling, practicality, interior ambience, and intelligent convenience.
