Overall, I like the EV5. It looks stylish especially in the light blue colour I had.

The EV5 seems to get the size factor just right. Small enough for an inner-city runabout, but large enough for a weekend escape or holiday.

The GT Line is particularly well equipped and comfortable. With features like heated seats, wireless charging tray and massage function for the driver.

Rear seats have two isofix points and three top tether spots. The rear seat room is large enough for a baby seat as well.

There is a lot of practical storage inside, and the rear seats will fold flat for a large boot area.

Performance comes from an 88.1-kilowatt hour battery. There are two motors to give All Wheel Drive and a one speed reduction transmission.

Its smooth and quiet to drive and feels nimble around town. A realistic range is around 480 km. Range and charging time are two factors that need to be addressed. It is slow charging.

It’s expensive though. Priced from a bit under $72,000 plus the usual costs.

The drive program went from Sydney Airport, through the southern suburbs of Sydney, down along the picturesque National park and south coast down to Gerringong.

We then headed up across the mountains to Bowral. An overnight stay then back to Sydney along the motorways.

This is what you may expect as typical weekend away in the EV5. As mentioned in a previous Motoring Minute the EV5 comes with an extended range battery that is good for between 400 and 555km depending on the model.

We drove three models. The front wheel drive Air with both the standard and extended range battery and the Earth with the extended range battery and AWD.

I have to say its now typical of what you expect from Kia. That is a stylish exterior and a comfortable, spacious and well-equipped interior.

Driving the EV5 is both pleasurable and peaceful. It’s quiet, with the only real noise coming from some wind and road noise on the entry model Air.

The instant torque is always a benefit for an EV. Its is engaging. Make no mistake, this isn’t a sports EV. It’s designed as an urban cruiser and weekend away style of SUV.

The Kia EV5 is jumping into what is becoming a crowded pool with any number of new Chinese brands playing in the same area. It will be interesting

The EV5 will come in three variants, the Air and Earth models are available now. The GT Line later in the year.

The entry level EV5 Air is available in 2WD with both a standard and long range battery. The Earth and GT-Line are available in AWD with an extended range battery and dual motors.

Pricing is from $56,770 RDAP for the entry level EV5 Air through to $71,770  plus the usual costs for the top model GT-Line.

The large number of new electric cars coming to Australia now increases the competition for sales in what appears to be a shrinking segment. Hybrid cars seems to be the growth segment currently.

The EV5 will face competition from Polestar, Tesla, DEEPAL, Zeekr, Audi and many more.

With the new NVES regulations coming into effect from 2025, the new car market will be interesting to watch in how brands navigate those rules and keep buyers happy as well

EV4 brings an unusual design to electric sedans which redefines what is possible is style.

And the EV5 is a mid-sized SUV designed for millennial families.

Al of these embrace sustainable production techniques and extensive use of recycled materials.

By using sustainably grown products like Mycelium and Hemp Kia is doing more for the environment on a broad scale. Details matter, such as having the carpets made from 100% recycled PET or even a portion from recycle fishing nets.

Kia is demonstrating its commitment to minimize its impact on the environment when producing vehicles with the introduction of 10 must-have sustainable items for all new Kia model lines.

Dare I say it, the future looks electric at Kia
