One of their popular vehicles is the mid-sized SUV, the Jolion. This is the same size as the Toyota RAV 4 or the Subaru Forester.

I drove the Haval Jolion Ultra Hybrid version recently. It’s not a bad looking SUV, with a prominent GWM logo up front.

Inside its comfortable and well laid out with a huge central touch screen. The touch sensitivity on the latest model is miles better than before. Also, the clarity is excellent.

The hybrid version comes with a 1.5 L 4 Cylinder petrol hybrid engine. It has reasonable performance and is easy and comfortable to drive. It drives the front wheels only through a 2 stage CVT.

The Jolion Hybrid is particularly economical, and I averaged around 6.5 L/100 K over the week. This was a mix of motorway and urban driving.

Many Chinese cars experience level 2 autonomous driving safety intrusions.. This means frustrating cruise control that self-brakes on the slightest bends and the inability to turn off the adaptive function. It also means going through the screen menu for a total of 6 touches to simply tun off the lane keep functions and return to the Apple CarPlay  screen.

The big benefit is the price. Haval Jolion Ultra Hybrid is priced at $38,990 RDAP and that’s awesome value.

The H6 GT is the sport version of the popular H6 SUV. It’s styled in the same lines as  BMW X4 or X6. I actually really like the styling.

Inside its comfortable, and packed with little luxuries like heated seats, wireless charging tray, plenty of interior storage areas and electric tailgate.

One thing Haval seem to do well is create plenty of interior space. It seems to have more rear legroom than many other cars in this segment.

It comes with a 2.0L petrol engine, providing 150kW of power and 320Nm of torque. This drives through a 7 speed DCT and AWD. This is a good combination, and it drives nicely. Unfortunately the H6 T doesn’t come with a hybrid version.

The mixed feeling come from little niggles that detract from driving. The user interface for the infotainment system is frustrating and overly complicated at times. And some safety features are exceptionally intrusive. The cruise control that slows down in a slight bend is downright dangerous.

I can understand why they are popular. They look good, have a lot of bling and are well priced and that’s enough for many buyers.

The H6 is quite stylish, has plenty of room inside and packed with luxury and safety features. Its also stunning value at around $45,000 drive away.

The front seats are comfortable as well as heated. They provide enough room for my tall frame with space behind for most people. There is plenty of head room and an overall feeling of space inside.

There is an abundance of storage areas, including a clever tray under the central transmission area.

Performance from the 1.5L turbo hybrid motor is spritely, and economy is excellent at around 6.8l/100k over the full weeks driving.

The clarity and resolution of the huge central screen could well be best in class.

However frustrating features are the little things. Like sometimes the touch sensitivity of the central screen requires a couple of touches to work. The voice recognition for Apple CarPlay is simply poor.

Safety features are overly intrusive, like sensing a stopped car in the pull off bay on the freeway and suddenly braking from 110kmh on cruise control for no reason. The car behind wasn’t appreciative. The H6 has all the safety, they just need work to make them less intrusive.

Overall it’s a balance. Stylish design, ample interior space, lots of features but some user interface issues that are quite frustrating.

Time will sort these I feel.
