Powered by a 2.4L Turbo diesel engine delivering 135kW of power and  480Nm of torque, it’s responsive to drive . With a GWM  9-speed automatic transmission it’s also reasonably economical as well.

The Canon isn’t a bad looking Ute and the XSR comes with extra style additions. These include full underbody protection, front and rear steel bumpers, black alloys, sports bar, roof rails, and a black snorkel.

Inside the Canon is comfortable and well laid out. The drivers’ instruments and large central screen have good resolution and easy to read. The heated and ventilated front seats are electrically adjustable. I do like the separate USB input on the rear view mirror for dash cams.

The XSR also comes with a Borg Warner 4WD system, front and rear diff locks, adjustable steering, 700 mm wading depth and other 4WD features.

I took the Canon XSR on some dirt roads that are heavily corrugated and potholed. The rear suspension is a little harsh, but it coped well. On sand it’s easy to drive and the low torque delivers when needed.

Rated to tow 3500kg I didn’t get a chance this time, but it certainly feels as if it will be a handy tow vehicle.

The best news is the price. From $51,990 plus the usual costs its pretty good value for money

The GWM Tank 300 is an interesting 4WD. Off road it is quite handy. It has great articulation, front and rear diff locks and  being small it fits in a lot of places larger 4WDs struggle with.

GWM is expanding the lineup with the introduction of a new turbo-diesel variant, available in two grades – Lux and Ultra.

GWM has made big inroads with their hybrid vehicles, but the diesel is a welcome addition.

At its core, GWM equips this vehicle with a powerful 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder engine, which cranks out 135kW of power and a solid 480Nm of torque between 1500 and 2500 rpm.

Paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, this powertrain achieves a claimed combined fuel economy of 7.8L/100km*.

Towing capacity has been raised to 3000 kg. But to be honest its much better with lighter trailers.

Pricing starts at $47,990 driveaway through to $51,990 driveaway and those prices are excellent value.

The Tank 300 has a bit of a cult following for its fun factor off road. But like a lot of true 4WDs the on road dynamics suffer a touch

We have seen the continued demise of the large family sedan with many brands not making them anymore.

The growth of SUVs seems to be unstoppable.

Along side that the sales are reflecting a changing of the guard. Chinese brands like MG and BYD are taking hold. Tesla’s dominant position is being eroded in the EV space.

There are also a few new Chinese brands arriving. Such as Zeekr, Leapmotor and it was recently announced that Inchcape is the new Australian Distributor for Deepal motors.

GWM as a brand has reinvented itself and the sales are showing results. It actually has a pretty good model lineup.

We have also seen some brands exit the market as they just didn’t get the product mix right or couldn’t capture the buying public’s attention.

The other shift we are seeing is a move away from pure EVs towards hybrids and PHEVs. This makes sense as the early adopters are all but exhausted and despite the Government trying to force the EVs upon us, buyers are speaking with their dollars.

Brands like Polestar are struggling. They have good products, but as a pure EV brand they are competing with more models in that space for a dwindling market share.

Yes the next few years will be interesting to watch.

First up it looks cool. It’s a chunky style and in the bright orange colour it certainly stood out.

Inside its comfortable, relatively spacious, and well laid out. The heated and ventilated front seats are supportive and allow enough room for my tall frame.

Where the frustration comes in is the clunky user interface and simply bad voice recognition. Little things like turning off the lane keep assist which I do every time is four layers in the central screen menu and sometimes the touch sensitivity isn’t the best.

Where I loved it is driving. Its not bad on road, with enough performance to keep you happy. However off road it excels. Front and rear diff locks, Multi 4WD choices and responsive feel in both steering and accelerator, places it right up there with the best 4WD’s around.

And the best part is that it is priced from a stunning $46,990 driveaway for the entry model. That’s value.

Tank 300 little Daily things that frustrate.

The Tank can be frustrating as mentioned. Little things like

• Overly intrusive safety features,
• Menu driven controls that require up to 4 pushes of the screen to simply turn off the lane keep assist,
• touch sensitivity on the central screen that is haphazard.
• Digital drivers dash central MFD that won’t show anything else except the lane keep unless you turn it off.
• Cruise control that thinks for itself when it shouldn’t
• Stop start calibration seems just a bit off.
• One touch indicator for lane swapping is finicky, often switching on and not turning off, and when you go to turn it off you end up indicating the other way.
• On a couple of occasions, the push door opening refused to work, and I had to use the fob.

These are all little things that I’m sure GWM will work out and recalibrate where necessary. But they exist now.

GWM Tank 300 4WD Ultra final thoughts

Tank 300 4WD leaves you with mixed feelings.

It seems well built, is comfortable inside. There is a large, clear central screen. However, user interface is frustrating. As is the intrusive safety features, especially the cruise control.

Off road it fights in a weight class well above its price range.

On sand it’s excellent, on dirt roads its smooth and compliant. The rough stuff it handles with ease. This is one a few vehicles that has front and rear diff locks and the least expensive by far.

I would be interested to drive the hybrid version, which would improve one issue of being thirsty along with extra power and torque.

The overall feel is practical, functional, spacious but has some issues that will be developed out as time passes.

There is nothing that even comes close to the capability, comfort and size for the price and that is a winning formula.

It should be on your list for a test drive.
