Transit Custom Sport – Regular listener will know that we have moved recently and that brings a lot of issues. One of those are how do you move all those boxes that seem to appear all the time.

It’s like you think you have done everything and yet there are another 20 boxes.

Well enter the Ford Transit Custom Sport. This van comes in a choice of seating arrangements; This time we had the long wheelbase five seat version.

Surprisingly practical and comfortable the Transit allowed us to swallow huge loads of boxes and gear as well as people.

It was put to good use over the two weeks we had it.

Up front there are five individual seats, all comfortable, and with plenty of room for most people. The front outer two seats are heated, which was fantastic for my aching back.

With features more like what you expect from a SUV, the Transit is well equipped for a family of five.

On top of that add the cavernous cargo area and you start to question choices of buying a SUV.

One minor issue is that you cant access the front of the cargo area from the side, so someone has to step in to retrieve luggage etc. It provided comical relief to the family seeing my 190cm tall dad doubled up inside the cargo area.

The Transit is easy to drive, with reasonable performance and economy.

This is a Motoring Minute

I’m Rob Fraser

EV work vans – Over the last few years there has been a lot of talk from the press about the EV revolution. Well, its been hyped more than its actually happening, but in some segments there has been some progress.

The work Van segment has seen several clever and practical all electric vans appear as choices for buyers.

Its in this segment that the EV choice may just prove practical and popular.

Last year we saw the introduction of two smaller inner city style delivery vans. The Peugeot e-Partner as well as the Renault Kangoo E-Tech. Both of these are smaller style vans, with a range around the 250 to 280km mark. This is ideal if you are using the vans for local runs and can have a base charge system during the day or overnight.

They are small, nimble, and practical for inner city work.

Moving u from that the Chinese have taken a stance with the LDV e-Deliver9 and now the LDV e-Deliver7. Both are mid to large electric vans that don’t compromise cargo capacity. ‘

Renault Master E-TECH Electric, Ford E-Transit long wheelbase van and the Mercedes Benz eVito Panel Van. Larger commercial vans with reasonable range.

Hyundai has the Mighty electric truck, a mid sized work truck that can be driven on a car license.

All up the commercial work vans and Utes are fertile ground for electric vehicles and we will see more of them this coming year

This is a Motoring Minute

It is offered in a single, long wheelbase variant.

Powered by a 50kWh lithium-ion battery, the e-Partner produces 100kW of power and 260Nm of torque and delivers a WLTP test range of 258km2.

Now this might seem like much, but the e-Partner is ideal for localised businesses like a florist, catering business, take-away food, parcel or smaller whitegoods delivery etc.

Small businesses that have an ability for back to base deliveries, and access to charging facilities will greatly benefit from the smart new van.

We drove the Peugeot on the launch on a city and suburban loop. It was quiet, smooth, and responsive. I got stuck in that afternoon Sydney traffic, however the e-Partner took it all in its stride.

The e-Partner is built on Peugeot’s e-MP2 platform. This rides and handles more like a SUV than a van. One clever feature is that the battery is under the floor and doesn’t restrict the cargo space at all.

I must admit I wasn’t sure what to expect before I drove the new Peugeot, but now it all just makes really good sense.

This is a Motoring Minute

We drove the Peugeot e-Partner on the launch on a city and suburban loop. It was quiet, smooth, and responsive. Unfortunately we got stuck in that afternoon Sydney traffic, but the e-Partner took it all in its stride.

The e-Partner is built on Peugeot’s e-MP2 platform, which rides and handles more like a SUV than a van. One clever feature is that the battery is under the floor and doesn’t restrict the cargo space at all.

I must admit I wasn’t sure what to expect before I drove the e-Partner, but now it all just makes really good sense.

This is a Motoring Minute
