Mercedes-Benz G 580 – The number of electric cars available are growing weekly at the moment. Mostly in the smaller SUV size.
However, bucking this trend Mercedes Benz has just revealed an all-electric version of the iconic G Wagon. It built its reputation on being a capable robust 4WD.
And the AMG version unfortunately was tainted with being associated with owners that had cash only style businesses.
However, the new Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology raises the bar for the iconic G-Class.
Its powertrain of four permanently excited synchronous motors delivers up to 108 kW and 291 Nm to each wheel.
The electric drivetrain produces a total system output of up to 432 kW and an impressive 1,164 Nm of maximum torque.
The G 580’s battery pack has a usable energy content of up to 116 kWh, giving the all-electric G-Class an NEDC assessed range of 567 km.
Impressive new offroad-ready technology such as G-STEERING allows the wheels to turn at different speeds and invoke slight oversteer depending on the situation.
While the revolutionary G-TURN allows the wheels on the left and right to spin in opposite directions – so the G 580 can practically turn on the spot when off-road on loose surfaces.
Priced from around $250,000 plus the usual costs its not cheap, but buyers of the G Wagon have never quibbled about price.
