The JAECOO J5 is a small SUV with a big selling point: choice. Rather than forcing buyers into a single powertrain, JAECOO offers petrol, hybrid, and electric versions, making the J5 an interesting proposition for anyone shopping at the more affordable end of the market.
The range kicks off with the J5 Track, using a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 108kW and 210Nm. It is the no-nonsense option, while the $29,990 Summit adds a much more generous equipment list and feels like the sweet spot for buyers who want plenty of kit without blowing the budget.
Then comes the J5 SHS-H Summit hybrid. With 165kW and 295Nm from its petrol-electric setup, it is easily the more interesting choice for drivers who want punchier performance and lower fuel use. At $34,990, it also undercuts many rivals offering similar hybrid technology.

Finally, there is the fully electric J5 EV Summit. Starting at $36,990 driveaway and offering a claimed 402km WLTP range, it makes EV ownership look considerably less intimidating from a price perspective.
And that is where the J5 really scores. It may not have the badge prestige of some established rivals, but it packs plenty of equipment, multiple powertrain choices, and sharp pricing into a stylish package. In a brief time Jaecoo has created a strong presence. For buyers chasing maximum bang for their buck, the J5 deserves a close look.
