Fuel source for cars – In our ongoing chats about the Car sales results for the year, today we chat about the breakup of what buyers are choosing as the fuel source for their vehicles.
Petrol remains the dominant fuel source with some 43% of sales. Diesel follows with about 31% of sales.
Hybrids and PHEVs follow with about 14.5% and BEVs lag with around 8%. Heavy vehicles make up the rest which are all diesels.
Consumers want to buy what suits their circumstances, not what is forced upon them.
Petrol and diesel are convenient. Also, with the surge in SUVs and especially Utes, there is a predominance of diesels.
Hybrids can change this. They make sense. Thery provide environmental benefits both in the supply chain and production and at the driving level. They have great economy, require no change to driving behaviour and have zero range anxiety.
With brands like Toyota announcing they will be supplying certain models in Hybrid petrol only, this will see a substantial rise in hybrid sales. Other brands are also diverting future product investment towards more hybrid models.
There are a number of reasons why EVs will probably settle around 8%. These include infrastructure, initial purchase price, charging inconvenience, range anxiety etc.
