Car Sales – Australia’s vehicle market remained very strong in August, with Chinese manufacturers occupying half of the top 10 brands and demand for battery electric vehicles remaining at elevated levels.

Overall sales for August were a touch above last year. The real difference has been in the elevated demand for battery electric vehicles.

For the first time ever EV sales were the dominant energy choice. This is on top of continuing growth in hybrid and PHEV sales.

New energy vehicles were a bit over half of all sales in August

Toyota remains the top brands with almost 20% market share.

They are followed by BYD, Kia, Ford and Mazda. The next five brands are Hyundai, GWM, Chery, MG and Mitsubishi.

Of the top ten models sold in August 3 were Utes and the rest were SUVs.

Chinese brands are certainly growing in popularity. The question remains is it sustainable. Some brands rely heavily on head office subsidies and bulk registrations. They do this for the NVES credits which are available for sale to other brands which are falling short of the ridiculous rules.

There also remains a larger debate over the convenience of EVs and the availability of electricity supply. Infrastructure also remains a limitation.

I have had a reasonable amount of feedback about buyers remorse after buying an EV and then realising it’s a completely different ownership experience.

Like always time will tell

The 2025 new car sales results for YTD November 2025 have been released. There isn’t anything dramatically different, rather continuing trends that we have seen most of the year.

In November there were 125,497 new vehicle sales recorded. This is slightly down on the same month last year.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice, but its slowly declining. Next is diesel. Taking up the sales from petrol are hybrids and PHEVs. These are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason.

Coming a distant last are pure EV’s. Sales are around 8.1% YTD despite there being over 110 models available for buyers.

SUV’s continue to grow in popularity with a touch over 60% of sales. Light commercial vehicles that include work Utes and delivery vans account for about 22% of sales and passenger vehicles are now around 15.7%.

Toyota remains the number one brand with almost 2 ½ times the sales of second place Ford. They are followed by Mazda, Kia and Hyundai.

The next top five spots include Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, MG and Isuzu Ute.

Of the top ten models sold in November, seven were SUV’s and three were Utes.

There are now over 60 brands available in Australia. However, while supply is increasing, demand remains fairly constant. If I remember my old economics degree, that spells trouble for some brands but should be a bonanza for buyers.

The other factor to watch is just how much growth will the Chinese brands have over the next few years. My guess is that they will become a problem for some established brands.

This is a Motoring Minute

The new car sales results for the YTD September have been released. There were 101,992 new cars delivered.
These figures see the China influence growing, especially in the BEV sector.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel source followed by diesel.

These two account for about 70 % of sales. Hybrid and PHEVs account for about 20% of sales Pure EV’s account for about 8% of YTD sales.

The growth in SUV’s continues with that sector being about 60% of the total. LCV including Utes and Vans represent about 23% of the total. Passenger cars continue to decline in popularity.

Toyota retains the top position, followed by Ford, Mazda, Kia, and Hyundai. The next five are where the Chinese brands are making inroads. They are Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, MG and Isuzu Ute.

Of the top ten sales in September three were Utes, and the rest were SUVs. Underneath this is a tale of two Utes. The BYD Shark 6 has quickly grown to a bit under 9% market share in the segment. While the Kia Tasman so far has failed to spark buyer desires.

What these figures show is that despite the draconian NVES legislation trying to force buyers into more EVs by imposing penalties on manufacturers, and that there are over 100 EV and 50 PHEV models available. Buyers don’t want pure EVs. Hybrids are by far more popular and practical.

Again, it shows just how out of touch the government is with everyday car buyers’ preferences.

Car Sales – The results for new car sales have been released for July 2025. The report shows that the deliveries for the month are 103,097 vehicles.

SUVs remain the most popular vehicle delivered with about 60% of the total. Next are the LCV’s which includes Utes and Vans with about 23%, passenger cars continue to slide in popularity.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel with 40%, diesel comes next with 30%. Hybrid and PHEV are growing in popularity with a combined 20% and EV continue to drop with about 5% of deliveries.

The top selling vehicle in July was the Toyota HiLux. Of the top ten vehicles three were Utes, six were SUV’s and one, the Toyota Corolla, is a passenger car.

Toyota remains the market leader with almost a 20% share. They are followed by Mazda, Ford, Kia Hyundai. The next five are Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, Isuzu Ute and MG. This reflect the changing nature of the market with three Chinese brands in there.

The results show that despite the Government trying to push the EV agenda, buyers will buy what suits them. And clearly Hybrids are a popular solution. Given the vast distances many vehicles travel in Australia, EVs clearly are an unacceptable choice. They are good for inner city dwellers, but basically anywhere outside the cities they are unworkable.

With the NVES penalties staring in July, the remaining months will prove interesting.

The new car sales results for the YTD ending April 2025 have been released. These show a decrease of a bit under 7% on last year. However, they are still a bit higher than 2023 which was a more normal year.

Once again Toyota was the top selling brand followed by Mazda, Ford, Kia, and Hyundai. The next top spots went to Mitsubishi, GWM, MG, Nissan, and Isuzu Ute. With Subaru sitting just outside the top ten.

SUVs remain the dominant market choice now accounting for 60% of sales. Of the top ten models sold in April, three were Utes, 6 were SUVs and one passenger car.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice followed by diesel. Then the combination of hybrid and PHEV is growing. EVs are still sluggish. Hybrids are the growth segment with more buyers choosing them for the economy and convenience combination.

PHEVs had a decline partly due to the change in FBT exemption availability. An example of misguided government changes.

Total EV sales for the YTD are around 4.6% of total reported sales. This again shows just how out of touch the Government NVES legislation is with everyday consumer behaviour.

This is also a global phenomenon with EV sales slowing almost everywhere.

The new car sales result for February 2025 have been released. 94,993 new vehicles were delivered in the month.. This is a 9.6% decline for the same month last year.

So far this year there have been just under 182,000 vehicles delivered.

There are two key issues with these figures. First is the declining sales as cost-of-living pressures really start to bite hard at consumers.

The second is just how out of touch with reality is the Governments NVES legislation.

They are pushing battery electric vehicles and imposing draconian penalties on brands that don’t meet their targets.

However, while there are any number on new brands and EV models available. Sales have collapsed to less than 6% of the total. This is a drop of 37% for the YTD from last year.

In contrast the sales of Hybrids and PHEVs continue to grow.

Toyota is the leading brand followed by Mazda, Kia, Ford and Mitsubishi. Followed by Hyundai, MG, GWM Nissan and Subaru.

SUV sales are now about 60.4% of sales, LCVs another 22.5%. Passenger car sales continue to decline with just 13.5% of total sales. Trucks make up the difference.

Results in November exceeded 112,000 delivers and follows on from about six strong months.

It looks like a tussle between the Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux for the top selling vehicle for 2023 and the result will be determined by how many vehicles they can get into the country before the year end.

Toyota is still the number one brand but has been severely hampered by supply issues. Mazda is number two followed by Ford, Kia, and Hyundai. The next five are Mitsubishi, MG Tesla, Subaru, and Isuzu Ute.

The top three selling vehicles in November were Utes, and the rest were SUVs of some sort.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice, followed by diesel then Hybrid and PHEV vehicles. EV sales account for about 7% of sales.

Car sales are often a lead indicator of economic climate and we could well see ourselves deep in recession in 2024.

Car Sales results

The Australian automotive market continues to break all-time sales records as more Australians take delivery of new vehicles than ever before.

Sales in November exceeded previous records with 112,141 delivered to Australians in the month, with more than 1.1 million new vehicles purchased year-to-date. The result highlights the continued strength of new vehicle sales with six of the past seven months the highest on record.

FCAI Chief Executive, Tony Weber, acknowledges the strong demand for a variety of vehicle options across various price brackets, that meet the needs of Australians.

“This is an extraordinary result in what is now likely to be an extraordinary record-breaking year. Another record-breaking month underscores the dynamic and competitive nature of Australia’s automotive landscape, showcasing the wide array of choices available to consumers,” Mr Weber said.

“As the challenges of the past year’s supply chain disruptions recede, consumers have greater access to a broad range of choices and increased accessibility in the market.

“The automotive sector remains a testament to the resilience and adaptability of both industry players and consumers alike. However, as cost-of-living pressures hit we may see a market cooling in the coming months, and we anticipate a more challenging 2024.”

Year-to-date sales of battery electric vehicles have reached 80,446. The growth in EV sales from the same time last year (28,326) underscores the increasing interest in low emission alternatives among Australian consumers. EV’s represented 7.7 per cent of the monthly sales and 7.2 per cent of sales year to date.

More car sales YTD May 2023 details

Australia’s automotive industry has achieved its best-ever May sales result with 105,694 new vehicle deliveries.

This result is a 12.0 per cent increase on the same month last year and represents a 2.7 per cent increase on May 2017 which was the previous best May result. The year-to-date sales of 456,833 is 4.3 per cent higher than the same period last year.

Every State and Territory saw an increase with significant growth in Western Australia of 25.1 per cent and Queensland 17.4 per cent compared with May 2022. Growth was recorded in all buyer type market segments – Private, Business, Government and Rental – compared with May 2022.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said the result was encouraging following many months where deliveries were hampered by shipping and logistics issues.

“This result is a signal that we are starting to see some improvement in supply,” Mr Weber said. “However, not all issues are resolved, and our members continue to work with their customers to improve vehicle delivery times.”

Mr Weber added that while vehicle supply issues might be beginning to ease, the industry remained cautious around broader economic conditions and their potential impact on demand.

“A large proportion of vehicles delivered this month would have been ordered during 2022,” he said. “Since then, we have seen a shift in economic conditions with a focus on rising cost pressures for households and businesses. Nevertheless, reports from our members indicate that demand remains firm.”

Breakdown

Toyota (18,340) was the market leader in May followed by Mazda (8,475), Hyundai (7,078), Kia (7,000) and Ford (6,251).

Of the top ten vehicles sold in February three were Utes, five were SUVs, one electric car and one hatchback.

SUVs account for 55% of sales, Light Commercial Vehicles another 22% and the rest are passenger cars.

Petrol cars account for over 50% of sales, followed by diesel with some 30% of sales

Battery electric vehicles accounted for 6.8 per cent of car sales with 5,932 sold in February. Almost 60% of those were from Tesla that had a delivery arrive. However, when you add in the hybrids the total was closer to 14%.

This shows that the market embraces hybrids as a practical solution. Toyota still sell more hybrids than anyone else.

The top ten brands so far this year are Toyota, by a reduced margin, followed by Mazda, Ford, Kia and Hyundai. Next is Mitsubishi, MG Subaru. Tesla makes a surprising appearance then Isuzu.

This is a Motoring Minute

FCAI Full Release.

Australia’s automotive industry delivered 86,878 vehicles during February 2023, which represents a 1.8 per cent increase on the same period in 2022.

“This is the best February result since 2019. It is particularly pleasing given global and domestic supply constraints,” FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said.

Battery electric vehicles accounted for 6.8 per cent of sales with 5,932 sold in February.

“Growing sales of electric vehicles proves that where a battery electric product exists which suits the driving habits, needs and finances of Australian motorists, they will purchase these vehicles,” Mr Weber said.

Zero and low emission vehicle sales, which includes battery electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles accounted for 13.9 per cent (12,102).

“The number of low emission vehicle sales demonstrates that there is an appetite among Australians for environmentally friendly vehicles. However, if we wish to accelerate this transition to a broader range of consumers in all parts of the country, Australia needs to adopt a fuel efficiency standard,” Mr Weber added.

A total of 13,625 vehicles were sourced from China, making it the third highest country of origin for new vehicles in February. Japan remains the largest source of new vehicles in the Australian market (24,805), followed by Thailand (18,557). Korea is the fourth highest country of origin (12,246).
