The new car sales results have come in for the full year 2025. And the biggest news is that it’s more of the same.

Overall, there were 1,241,037 vehicles sold in 2025, This is close to 2024 figures.

Consumers continue to favour SUVs with around 60% of sales, LCVs which are Utes and vans are about 22.5% and the decline in passenger car sales continues.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice followed by Diesel. The growth segment is in hybrids and PHEVs. These now account for about 20% of all vehicle sales.

This makes sense as hybrids provide better economy , lower emissions without any inconvenience.

Battery electric vehicle sales from all sources totalled 103,269 units, accounting for 8.3 per cent of sales for the year.

Despite more than 100 battery electric vehicle models available in Australia, growth in the segment has been slower than expected.

What is interesting is where our vehicles come from.

Japan remained the largest source country, followed by Thailand. Then China and Korea is in fourth place. Together, these four major Asian manufacturing nations represent 80 per cent of the market.

Chinese built vehicles now account for about 18% of sales.

Toyota remains the dominant brand with a touch under 20% share. Followed by Ford, Mazda, Kia, and Hyundai. The next five brands are Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, Isuzu and MG.

The latest car sales results for the year end 2024 have been released. The overall result has seen a slight increase on last year, but the underlying figures tell a different story.

2024 has been a year of two halves. The first half the sales were booming. Many brands no longer faced supply issues, and pent-up demand was being satisfied.

The second half saw sales drop dramatically.

Some brands benefited by the increased demand for hybrids, especially Toyota, but also newer brands such as GWM. Others saw increases in sales because of the looming draconian NVES rules that came into effect 1st January. This particularly applies to out favourite dual cab diesel Utes.

Some brands experienced a natural decline in model sales before releasing a new model. Some brands simply had a bad year.

2025 will see a few existing brands fade away and the growth of new brands, mainly from China. There will be a lot of EVs coming, but the word for 2025 is Hybrids.

So, that means more brands in a dwindling market. Brands are facing challenges in a market that doesn’t want them, and are increasing prices for their popular SUVs and trucks. Its going to be interesting.
