That is exactly what happened when I drove the Audi RS6 Performance last week.

Let me say up front I absolutely love this car. Its simply awesome.

It looks stunning and is packed with almost every luxury, comfort and safety feature Audi can throw in there.

Inside it fits me perfectly. Not something I can say about many cars.

It’s powered by the familiar 4.0L Bi-Turbo TFSI petrol engine with some 463kW of power and 850Nm of torque. This transfers to all four wheels through the brilliant Quattro drivetrain and an eight speed sports automatic transmission.

Start the engine, hear that V8 burble and away you go. Like all Audi performance models, it has twin personalities. It will happily potter around town without fuss. But ask more of it and its like superman, without finding a phone booth to change in. It simply explodes into action.

0-100kmh times of 3.4 seconds and a limited 280kmh top speed speak to its supercar performance.

Now to the disappointment. The last time I was lucky enough to drive it was at Philip Island racetrack. Blasting around that track at speeds up to 250kmh was exhilarating.

Unfortunately driving the RS6 around town and on the freeways is like having the best racehorse and confining it to a paddock to trot around.

High performance Sportwagon’s are becoming increasingly rare with the increasing popularity of Sports SUVs. Neither Mercedes Benz nor BMW have a equivalent model. The closest is the new BMW M3 Touring, that has a smaller footprint.

Otherwise, the closest you could get is a sportback version of a SUV.

This coincided with the launch of the upgraded Audi RS6 Avant Performance and RS7 Sportback Performance models.

On the day I got to drive an RS3 on the skid pan, trying but failing to perfect drifting and slides. It was huge fun though and shows two things. How good the little RS3 is and having fun in a controlled environment is always better.

On the track I drove the latest RS e-tron GT and the RS6 Avant Performance.

It was an eye opener to the differences between the EV and turbo V8 engines. The RS e-tron GT was blindingly quick off the mark and with its wide track and instant torque, it powered its way around the track.

RS6, was my pick for the day

The RS6, however was my pick for the day. There really is nothing better than that deep V8 burble, the exhaust notes under acceleration and the blips as you change down gears. The aural experience adds to the driving experience immeasurably.

The benefit of the drive day was that I could push my boundaries on the track, with one-on-one guidance from the instructor in the lead car.

When I started to think I was doing okay, all I needed to do was realise that the instructor was cruising ahead of me keeping an eye on me in the mirror and talking through a two way radio correcting my line and braking etc, all while driving at race speeds.

Ive done a number of these style of days over the years, and I cannot recommend enough that if you are keen to experience what a car can really do on a race track, the the Audi Sport drive days are first class.
