With HEMI V8 engine production ending in the US for RAM 1500 DT trucks. It marks the end of a production run that can trace its roots back to 1951.

The latest versions have that distinctive and addictive V8 burble. They produce some 291kW  of power and 556Nm of torque.

Owners can tow up to 4500 kg, depending on which model is chosen.

A HEMI V8 engine is so called thanks to the shape of the cylinder head’s combustion chamber. A scooped out half circle or hemisphere, which allowed the spark plugs to be positioned closer. To shorten the burn distance of the air/fuel mixture.

This unique hemisphere shape meant domed pistons were used to produce sufficient compression. Which allowed for an increase in engine power.

I am a big fan of this motor, its so easy to live with. Except of course the fuel economy, but they also have variable cylinder use so that its surprisingly economical on the freeway.

For the price of a top spec LandCruiser or Defender. You can have a RAM 1500 Pickup truck in one of four models. And a bit of nostalgia with the Hemi V8.

Having driven the TRX, all I can say is I love it. If I could afford it, I would definitely buy this last piece of automotive history.

Sadly, I don’t think we will ever see it’s like again.

But what happens when someone decides to make a true sports truck.

Well, you get the RAM 1500 TRX. This comes with a Supercharged 6.2L V8 Hemi petrol engine. Power is 523kW and torque is a handy 882 Nm. This drives all four wheels through an 8 speed AT with 8 drive modes available. Oh, and for those times when you just have to, there is also a launch control function.

The weight of this truck is about 3000kg. It’s a monster. A monster that will go from 0-100KM/h in about 4.5 seconds. It will also tow 3500kg and go off road when you want.

Of course it comes with just about every luxury , safety and comfort feature Ram Trucks can jam in there. It will put a lot of large premium 4WDs and SUVs to shame in that department.

As it will when asked to seat five tall occupants, which the others can only dream of.

All this performance and capability does come at a price though. THE TRX will drink fuel at an astonishing rate. I got it down to about 18L/100K on the motorway and averaged about 21L/100K overall. Don’t even ask what its like when you bury the right foot or drive on sand.

The RAM 1500 TRX is priced from around $225,000 plus the usual costs and I absolutely love it. There is nothing else like it in Australia.

The Laramie Sport adds layers of features such as colour coded bumpers, grill, and mirrors, and 20-inch alloy wheels. It also comes standard with the clever RamBox style tub with side lockable partitions.

Inside its particularly comfortable with room for five adults in comfort. The Sport comes with a 12-inch digital drivers instrument cluster, surround cameras, additional safety features and adaptive cruise control.

All RAM 1500 pickup trucks are powered by the 5.7-litre V8 HEMI® engine, delivering 291kW and 556Nm through a silky-smooth 8-speed gearbox. This now comes with eTorque technology creating a mild hybrid system for better fuel economy. It wasn’t too bad. We got it down to around 10L/100 on the motorway and around 13l/100k in the urban areas.

The RAM also comes with a dual range 4WD system and up to 4.5T towing capacity.

As an outback touring or towing vehicle there is a lot of plus points for this truck. Its also well priced against some more traditional 4WD at $136,950 plus the usual costs.

The RAM 1500 Laramie Sport is a different choice for buyers rather than a LandCruiser, Defender or Patrol

Buyers of the mid sized Pick-Up trucks now have more choices. They could look at the factory backed models like the  Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Toyota Tundra, Ford F150 

There are a few after market conversion models from Harrison F Trucks, and Performax. 

Alternatively buyers could look at the Nissan Patrol Warrior, Toyota LandCruiser GR Sport or the Land Rover Defender.

Or, like me you simply love this style of pick-up truck and want one.

When you consider what you will pay for a large 4WD like a Toyota LandCruiser GR Sport, or Land Rover Defender, then the purchase price becomes good value by comparison.

Even large premium SUVs start to pale in comparison.

The RAM 1500 Laramie Sport has everything they have plus more for similar price.
