But what happens when someone decides to make a true sports truck.

Well, you get the RAM 1500 TRX. This comes with a Supercharged 6.2L V8 Hemi petrol engine. Power is 523kW and torque is a handy 882 Nm. This drives all four wheels through an 8 speed AT with 8 drive modes available. Oh, and for those times when you just have to, there is also a launch control function.

The weight of this truck is about 3000kg. It’s a monster. A monster that will go from 0-100KM/h in about 4.5 seconds. It will also tow 3500kg and go off road when you want.

Of course it comes with just about every luxury , safety and comfort feature Ram Trucks can jam in there. It will put a lot of large premium 4WDs and SUVs to shame in that department.

As it will when asked to seat five tall occupants, which the others can only dream of.

All this performance and capability does come at a price though. THE TRX will drink fuel at an astonishing rate. I got it down to about 18L/100K on the motorway and averaged about 21L/100K overall. Don’t even ask what its like when you bury the right foot or drive on sand.

The RAM 1500 TRX is priced from around $225,000 plus the usual costs and I absolutely love it. There is nothing else like it in Australia.

The RAM 1500 Big Horn is now the entry level for the DT model. It comes with a choice of two cargo tub lengths. One with a 5’7” tub, which I drove, and the other with a 6’3” tub.

Pricing starts around the $120,000 mark plus the usual costs.

Being the new entry model, it has a lot less features than the Laramie Sport I drove a few weeks ago. But it is still surprisingly well equipped, the main difference is a smaller central screen and fabric seats.

It has the same cavernous interior with room for five adults in comfort.

The RAM Big Horn comes with the legendary 5.7-litre V8 HEMI^® engine, delivering 291kW OF power and 556Nm of torque through a silky-smooth 8-speed gearbox. The transmission dial is mounted on the front dash to the left of the steering wheel.

The big news is the handy 4.5T towing capacity. This is the work Truck that will prove popular with many buyers.

It comes with push button 4WD select functionality. As with the Laramie Sport, the Big Horn isn’t designed for tight rocky 4WD tracks in standard format. However, it’s awesome on outback trails, and forest roads. I took onto my local beach, and it was effortless.

As an outback touring vehicle towing a big van its hard to beat.

Buyers of the mid sized Pick-Up trucks now have more choices. They could look at the factory backed models like the  Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Toyota Tundra, Ford F150

There are a few after market conversion models from Harrison F Trucks, and Performax.

Alternatively buyers could look at the Nissan Patrol Warrior, Toyota LandCruiser GR Sport or the Land Rover Defender.
