The new car sales results have come in for the full year 2025. And the biggest news is that it’s more of the same.

Overall, there were 1,241,037 vehicles sold in 2025, This is close to 2024 figures.

Consumers continue to favour SUVs with around 60% of sales, LCVs which are Utes and vans are about 22.5% and the decline in passenger car sales continues.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice followed by Diesel. The growth segment is in hybrids and PHEVs. These now account for about 20% of all vehicle sales.

This makes sense as hybrids provide better economy , lower emissions without any inconvenience.

Battery electric vehicle sales from all sources totalled 103,269 units, accounting for 8.3 per cent of sales for the year.

Despite more than 100 battery electric vehicle models available in Australia, growth in the segment has been slower than expected.

What is interesting is where our vehicles come from.

Japan remained the largest source country, followed by Thailand. Then China and Korea is in fourth place. Together, these four major Asian manufacturing nations represent 80 per cent of the market.

Chinese built vehicles now account for about 18% of sales.

Toyota remains the dominant brand with a touch under 20% share. Followed by Ford, Mazda, Kia, and Hyundai. The next five brands are Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, Isuzu and MG.

New Car Sales – The latest new car sales results for the YTD October have been released. The market remained steady with small variations from the last two years.

What is interesting is the continued growth of hybrid and PHEV sales.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel source with about 39% of the market. Followed by diesel with about 30%. Hybrids account for about 15% of sales and Plug in Hybrids adds another 4%.

Pure EVs account for about 8% of sales.

SUVs again dominated the market, accounting for 61.7 per cent of total sales. Medium SUVs alone accounted for one in four vehicles sold, the most popular segment nationally. Passenger vehicles made up just 12.2 per cent of sales.

Toyota remains the top brands. Followed by Ford, Mazda, Kia, and Hyundai.

The next five brands are where the changes reflect the growing Chinese brand growth.

They are Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, MG and Isuzu Ute.

Utes make up four of the top ten vehicles delivered in October. The other six were SUVs.

The Ute segment remains buoyant. In this the BYD Shark 6 PHEV has continued with strong sales while the Kia Tasman has so far failed to excite the market. The old favourites HiLux, Ranger, D-Max and Triton keep satisfying buyer demand.

Into this segment there have been quite a few new entrants and the next 4-6 months will prove interesting.

The new car sales results for the YTD September have been released. There were 101,992 new cars delivered. This brings the YTD total to a bit under 940,000.

These figures see the China influence growing, especially in the BEV sector.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel source followed by diesel.

These two account for about 70 % of sales. Hybrid and PHEVs account for about 20% of sales Pure EV’s account for about 8% of YTD sales.

The growth in SUV’s continues with that sector being about 60% of the total. LCV including Utes and Vans represent about 23% of the total. Passenger cars continue to decline in popularity.

Toyota retains the top position, followed by Ford, Mazda, Kia, and Hyundai. The next five are where the Chinese brands are making inroads. They are Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, MG and Isuzu Ute.

Of the top ten sales in September three were Utes, and the rest were SUVs. Underneath this is a tale of two Utes. The BYD Shark 6 has quickly grown to a bit under 9% market share in the segment. While the Kia Tasman so far has failed to spark buyer desires.

What these figures show is that despite the draconian NVES legislation trying to force buyers into more EVs by imposing penalties on manufacturers, and that there are over 100 EV and 50 PHEV models available. Buyers don’t want pure EVs. Hybrids are by far more popular and practical.

Again, it shows just how out of touch the government is with everyday car buyers’ preferences.

This is a Motoring Minute

New Car Sales – The new car sales results for the first half of the year have been released. All up there have been a touch over 600,000 sales so far. Given the economic climate this is a good result.

There are a couple of interesting trends. The first is that the true effect of the punitive NVES legislation hasn’t come into play yet.

Second is that Australians still love their Utes with the top four vehicles reported sold for June being Utes. Along side that the love affair with SUVs continues with the remaining 6 vehicles being from that category.

Next is the continuing emergence of mainstream Chinese brands. GWM, BYD and MG are all in the top ten brands.

Pure EV sales continue to decline and now sit at about 6% of total sales. Hybrids and PHEVs on the other hand continue to grow and with about 20% of total sales.

Toyota remains the dominant brand with a touch under 20% market share. Mazda, Ford, Kia, and Hyundai follow them. The next top five brands reflect changing consumer behaviour, They are Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, Isuzu Ute and MG.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice followed by diesel then Hybrids.

SUVs also remain the dominant choice with about 60% of sales, followed by LCVs which includes Utes. Then passenger cars, which are declining every month.

Now that the draconian NVES penalties will apply from July 1 I think that the year-end results will reflect a different mix of vehicles.

The new car sales results for the YTD ending April 2025 have been released. These show a decrease of a bit under 7% on last year. However, they are still a bit higher than 2023 which was a more normal year.

Once again Toyota was the top selling brand followed by Mazda, Ford, Kia, and Hyundai. The next top spots went to Mitsubishi, GWM, MG, Nissan, and Isuzu Ute. With Subaru sitting just outside the top ten.

SUVs remain the dominant market choice now accounting for 60% of sales. Of the top ten models sold in April, three were Utes, 6 were SUVs and one passenger car.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice followed by diesel. Then the combination of hybrid and PHEV is growing. EVs are still sluggish. Hybrids are the growth segment with more buyers choosing them for the economy and convenience combination.

PHEVs had a decline partly due to the change in FBT exemption availability. An example of misguided government changes.

Total EV sales for the YTD are around 4.6% of total reported sales. This again shows just how out of touch the Government NVES legislation is with everyday consumer behaviour.

This is also a global phenomenon with EV sales slowing almost everywhere.

This is a Motoring Minute

The latest car sales results for the year end 2024 have been released. The overall result has seen a slight increase on last year, but the underlying figures tell a different story.

2024 has been a year of two halves. The first half the sales were booming. Many brands no longer faced supply issues, and pent-up demand was being satisfied.

The second half saw sales drop dramatically.

Some brands benefited by the increased demand for hybrids, especially Toyota, but also newer brands such as GWM. Others saw increases in sales because of the looming draconian NVES rules that came into effect 1st January. This particularly applies to out favourite dual cab diesel Utes.

Some brands experienced a natural decline in model sales before releasing a new model. Some brands simply had a bad year.

2025 will see a few existing brands fade away and the growth of new brands, mainly from China. There will be a lot of EVs coming, but the word for 2025 is Hybrids.

So, that means more brands in a dwindling market. Brands are facing challenges in a market that doesn’t want them, and are increasing prices for their popular SUVs and trucks. Its going to be interesting.

This is a Motoring Minute

Overall, the YTD result is a record but there was a 12.4% decline in September. This could be as a result of tough economic times and manufacturers finally soaking up all the back orders they were sitting on.

Electric vehicles continue their decline as early adopters have all but been exhausted and buyers are speaking with their dollars and shifting towards Hybrids and PHEVs.

These cars make sense for Australia, more than EVs. This is despite the Government trying to force consumers into EVs.

The Australian love affair with Utes continues with three of the top ten sales and the rest are SUVs.

In fact, some 56% of sales YTD have been SUVs. The LCV segment is another 22.5% so those two classes of vehicle account for almost 80% of sales.

Toyota continues its market dominance with almost 20% of the market. That’s more than the next two brands Ford and Mazda, added together. They are followed by Kia, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Isuzu, MG, Nissan and GWM.

There have also been a few new brands enter the market, mainly Chinese and EV based, competing for a dwindling market share.

That’s going to be interesting

This is a Motoring Minute

Popular cars – Today let’s have a look at a few Automotive brands and what their sales figures mean.

Headline figures say one thing, but analysis says another for popular cars. For instance, the top selling vehicle in June was the Ford Ranger, but overall Toyota has almost 30% market share in the LCV segment ahead of ford with 25%.

Ford is also heavily dependent on the Ranger/Everest models for its sales, with almost 90% of their sales coming from them.

Other brands like Kia have eight of their 12 models are popular cars, contributing over 1,000 sales each. This makes for a healthy spread. Interestingly the brilliant KIA EV9 has racked up 313 sales so far.

Mazda is another brand with a wide spread of models sold, with the CX-5 a standout. Interestingly the move upmarket from the CX-9 to the CX-90 Hasn’t proved successful. The more affordable models are the main sellers.

Mercedes Benz has some 27 different models available but only four contribute over 1000 sales so far this year. The rest of the dribs and drabs add up.

Compare this to Isuzu Ute that has two models with a few variants, and they sit in the top ten brands.

Some brands can sell relatively few cars yet can still be profitable, others can sell many and break even.

Segment share is also important. Take Ram truck, they had an almost monopoly on the American Pickup segment, but their success has led to Ford, Chevrolet and even Toyota all now offering models and as a result RAMS dominance is disappearing rapidly.

Yes the Australian Automotive landscape remains an interesting one

EV Sales – There has been a lot of talk recently about the booming EV market. Well let’s have a deeper look at it.

So far this year BEV sales are about 50,219, which is a touch under 8% of total sales. June results saw a decline in monthly sales.

Now I believe that around 8% is the natural market demand. To date that has been soaked up by early adopters, buyers that want to try something different, buyers that feel an EV suits their localised lifestyle etc.

However there has also been a bit of research lately that has shown that a significant proportion of first time buyers wouldn’t buy another EV.

I also think we will see a shift more towards to corporates and government departments being the major buyers of EVs, rather than individuals.

We have also seen new entrants, mainly from Chinese brands like BYD, MG etc with increasingly cheaper EVs offered. This has led to substantial discounting on brands like Tesla, which does nothing to engender brand loyalty for buyers that missed out.

This has a two fold effect. It destroys resale values of existing EVs, as we have seen, and makes some brands question the substantial investment they have made into EVs with diminishing returns.

Electric cars have a place for buyers, but they are not the total solution that many evangelistic parties want them to be.

This is a Motoring Minute

I’m Rob Fraser
