Well Mazda has shown how this can be done with Mazda approved accessories with the vehicle im driving this week.

The base is a BT-50 GT dual cab pickup 4WD. This is in itself a capable vehicle with a price of a touch over $66,000 plus the usual costs.

To this they have added another $23,000 worth of accessories to create a capable and good looking Ute.

Key highlights of what has been added include:

• Premium black paint for that cool look
• Single hoop bull bar
• Sports bar for the tub as well as a manual lockable roller cover.
• Snorkel and dust sealing kit.
• Roof platform and mounting kit
• Very cool looking SP model alloy wheels
• Some cosmetic additions like internal mats, window weather shields, tub carpet liner
• And more.

There is also a DO35 tow hitch, 12 pin plug and Anderson plug along with an electronic brake controller for heavy duty towing.

All up the BT-50 comes in around $89,000 plus some costs. It’s a great example of what can be done at the showroom when you purchase your vehicle, rather than after market.

Features specific top the GT model include

These features make the GT model a lot more comfortable for an urban daily driver. I especially appreciated the heated seats in the cold and wet weather we had for the week.

• New front end with LED lights.

The Mazda comes with the proven 3.0L 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine with 140 kW of power and 450Nm of torque. This is matched to an Aisin six speed AT and selectable 4WD system. It is also Rated to tow 3500kg.

The Mazda BT-50 GT is smooth riding on road. The suspension seems to soak up many of the daily bumps and it’s a comfortable place to sit.

There are two isofix and top tether points for baby seats but the rear room is tight like most Utes

Off road it remains very capable. Forest trails and dirt roads are a breeze, sand driving is easy and when it gets really rough the BT0-50 shines.

Priced from  $66,170 plus the usual costs it also represents good value.
