It’s called the C10 REEV, for range extender electric vehicle.

The 1.5L petrol engine acts as a generator for the 28.4 kWh battery. Its constantly charging the battery rather than driving the SUV.

There are a few vehicles like this and it’s an unusual variation, one that seems to work well.

With conservative styling and plenty of interior space the C10 is a convenient family sized SUV.

What is an issue for me is that everything is controlled by the central screen and things are not where you expect them to be. Nothing is intuitive for me. Perhaps younger drivers will like it, but for an old bloke like me its annoying.

For example, the hazard lights switch is on the roof bank of switches for the sunroof. Also, there is no start or stop button. You lock unlock the car by placing the credit card style key over the sensor on the exterior mirror.

That also starts and stops the car. Two other frustrating features are that you have to find the menus to turn off the intrusive safety features every time you drive. And surprisingly there is no apple CarPlay or Android Auto  functionality.

Once you get past the quirks and frustrations, the C10 REEV actually drives nicely. Its smooth, responsive, and quiet. The seats are especially comfortable and there’s plenty of room in the rear seats and boot.

Its also economical and with a range of over 1000kms handy for the budget.

Priced from $43,888 plus the usual costs for the entry model it’s also outstanding value.

The C10’s 5-door layout offers a spacious cabin, though calling it ‘luxury’ might be a stretch unless you consider a large touchscreen and a minimalist dashboard to be the height of opulence.

On the road, the Leapmotor C10 impresses with a smooth, almost serene drive. The acceleration is surprisingly peppy for a vehicle of its size—around 0 to 100 km/h in about 8 seconds.

But don’t start thinking you’re in a sports car; this is an SUV, not a rocket. The range is decent, too, with up to 400 kilometres on a full charge, which should get you through most city commutes and a weekend getaway without needing to panic about your next charging stop.

Inside, it’s roomy enough, with decent legroom and a well-organized layout. There’s a large infotainment screen, but—just a heads-up—those touch controls aren’t always the most intuitive.

Still, it does the job, and you get the feeling the car’s trying its hardest to impress you, even if it’s not quite the luxury experience it might hope to be.

Overall, the Leapmotor C10 is a solid, practical option for anyone looking to make the jump into electric without saying goodbye to comfort. Just don’t expect it to turn your daily drive into a thrill ride. But hey, as long as it gets you from point A to point B without any drama… who’s complaining?”
