Firstly, I really like the styling. The Rexton hasn’t always been known for good looks, but that has definitely changed. It now looks quite stylish and well proportioned.

Inside, it’s spacious and comfortable, with a level of luxury that feels well suited to family life. That said, it does fall a little short in terms of technology and digital design. While it’s not a deal breaker, some buyers will notice the more basic approach to the dashboard and screens.

One thing I do miss is wireless smartphone connectivity, as using a cable can mean messy wires around the cabin. I also found that the Apple CarPlay controls sit on the far left side of the screen, which requires a bit of a reach to use while driving.

As I’ve mentioned before, the turbo-diesel engine is strong enough for everyday driving and delivers reasonable fuel economy.

While most new families probably won’t be towing anything heavy, it’s worth noting the Rexton is rated to tow up to 3,500 kilograms.

Priced from around $64,200 drive-away, the top-spec model represents outstanding value.

That said, it’s worth looking at the lower-spec versions, as buyers can save close to $3,000 by skipping the Sport Pack and deciding which features they’re happy to trade off.

Aside from a few small niggles, the KGM Rexton Ultimate Sport 4WD gets the mum-and-bub approval.

One of the first things I look at as a mum is how easy it is to install a baby seat. In the Rexton, this was refreshingly simple, with ISOFIX and top tether points, and doors that open wide enough to make access easy — especially when you’re lifting a sleeping baby.

There’s more rear-seat space than I expected too, which means plenty of room for me to sit back there when needed. The boot is large enough to handle all the baby gear and then some.

Like most SUVs in this class, though, once all seven seats are in use, boot space is limited.

Access to the third row is also a little tight, with restricted leg room.

Around town, the Rexton is easy, comfortable, and economical to drive, more like a family SUV than a traditional four-wheel drive.

While the Rexton is certainly capable off-road, it’s probably best suited to families who want a comfortable, spacious wagon for everyday life, with 4WD capability if needed.

That’s exactly how we used it — no off-roading, just reliable family transport.

I had the Ultimate XLV version for a few weeks. That is the top spec model with the extended wheelbase and tub length.

Along with upgraded specs for most models the Musso also underwent some design changes that make it more streamlined and styling.

I like the new front end with the sleek LED headlights on the Ultimate model. Other features I appreciated were the comfortable front seats with additional lumbar support for the driver. Both front seats are heated and ventilated.

There is plenty of room both front and back with the extended wheelbase.

One unusual feature is the steering wheel, thick at the bottom and thin on top. It takes a little adjustment to feel comfortable.

Powered by a 2.2L four cylinder turbo diesel engine. It provides some 133kW of power and 420Nm of torque from 1600 rpm. This runs through a part time 4WD system and a six speed sports automatic transmission.

On road ride and handling is good and smooth for a Ute. Off road the suspension seems to be complaint and soaks up most of the track corrugations.

Overall, the KGM Musso is easy to live with and practical. Priced from $53,000 drive away for the top models it’s also better value than many more popular Japanese branded Utes.

I’ve had the Musso Ultimate XLV with Luxury pack, for a few weeks and I really enjoy driving it.

Priced from an unbelievable $50,500 drive away its outstanding value.

One key feature of the XLV is the 300mm longer tub measuring 1.6m long. The wheelbase is also 110mm longer.

Overall, It’s a handy size and with around 880kg payload.
