The first is when you go to overtake a slower moving car they speed up.

I drive a lot on motorways and almost always on cruise control. So im driving at a constant speed. Often, I will come up behind a slower moving vehicle, pull out to overtake in the passing lane and – yep, they speed up.

But I just stay on cruise control and inevitably when I start to pull ahead, they go back to their previous speed and fade away.

The question is why? I don’t know if it’s because they realise they were going slow. Or it’s a fear of something in their peripheral vision. Or they are just bad drivers .

It’s the same when you are on a single lane road and there is a passing lane ahead. All of a sudden, the car that’s doing 20km under the limit will speed up to 5 km over the limit simply because they don’t want to be passed, only to slow again to 20 km below the limit again when it returns to single lanes.

And the third scenario is the right hand lane hugger. They refuse to move over even when there is no car they are passing.

Yep, compulsory standardised driver education can’t come soon enough

My top three are

At number three is the sanctimonious right hand lane hugger. Look ahead at a traffic jam and almost always there will be a driver hogging the right hand lane just sitting there.

At number two is the speeders. But not just any speeder. It’s the ‘P” plate driver usually red “P”s in a tradie Ute that is overloaded and going between 120-130km/h.

These guys are just plain dangerous. Usually, their egos exceed by a fair margin their driving ability and their skills are questionable at best.

They will fly up behind a car that is usually overtaking properly, and sit right on their rear bumper, until the front driver moves over after overtaking, then the “P” plate driver will zoom off again.

There is a reason why these drivers figure so highly in road mortality rates.

Top spot for the most dangerous driver goes to the person that is obeying the road rules. The “P” plate driver that is going 80 km/h as they are told to do.

Speed usually isn’t an issue, speed differential is.

Unfortunately, these guys are usually in smaller cars and have 65 tonne trucks barrelling down on them then pulling out sharply to overtake.  Our driver education needs overhauling
