GWM Canon XSR – It seems everywhere you look these days there is a new Ute. One that has been here for a little while is the GWM Canon and I drove the XSR Spec last week.

Powered by a 2.4L Turbo diesel engine delivering 135kW of power and 480Nm of torque, it’s responsive to drive . With a GWM 9-speed automatic transmission it’s also reasonably economical as well.

The Canon isn’t a bad looking Ute and the XSR comes with extra style additions. These include full underbody protection, front and rear steel bumpers, black alloys, sports bar, roof rails, and a black snorkel.

Inside the Canon is comfortable and well laid out. The drivers’ instruments and large central screen have good resolution and easy to read. The heated and ventilated front seats are electrically adjustable. I do like the separate USB input on the rear view mirror for dash cams.

The XSR also comes with a Borg Warner 4WD system, front and rear diff locks, adjustable steering, 700 mm wading depth and other 4WD features.

I took the Canon XSR on some dirt roads that are heavily corrugated and potholed. The rear suspension is a little harsh, but it coped well. On sand it’s easy to drive and the low torque delivers when needed.

Rated to tow 3500kg I didn’t get a chance this time, but it certainly feels as if it will be a handy tow vehicle.

The best news is the price. From $51,990 plus the usual costs its pretty good value for money

This is a Motoring Minute

Cannon Ute – Australians love their Utes and one of the brands that has made a lot of progress in recent years is GWM. Their Cannon Ute has become more popular recently.

They have just announced the 2025 upgrades, and the latest model is available from now in dealerships.

These include improvements in the engine, technology and interior fit out.

The 4WD Cannon Ute now comes with a 2.4l turbo diesel engine with 135kW of power and 480Nm of torque. This places it amongst the main competitors. Interestingly it also comes with a 9 Sp AT as well. Peak torque is between 1500-2500 rpm which helps with the 3500kg towing rating.

Equipped with a new generation of selectable intelligent all-terrain drive modes. Depending on the grade, up to seven modes are available, including Normal, Eco, Sport, Snow, Mud, and Sand.

Inside the redesign highlights a large, high-definition 12.3-inch touchscreen display. This enables seamless wireless smartphone connectivity. There is also a wireless charging tray.

I have to say the touch sensitivity of the GWM screens has improved substantially over the last few years.

There are four model variants available priced from $40,490 through to $49,990 drive away. This is why they are so popular, they represent excellent value for money

This is a Motoring Minute
