EV Sales – With the latest new car sales results there has been an Interesting development. That is in April EV sales surged. The months sales were about 16% of the total.

For the YTD EV sales are around 13% of sales. I still believe that at year end they will be 9-10%

This surge is driven by three factors.

Higher petrol pricing simply because successive Australian governments have failed to secure adequate supplies of local refined fuel.

Continued government incentives for EV purchases with the electric car discount

The ridiculous NVES legislation starting to penalise and affect manufacturers.

All three of these factors show extremely poor government policy, that ultimately you and I, the taxpayers will pay for.

Currently there are around 110 EV models available for sale. With more brands and models joining almost every month.

The problem with increased EV sales is everything that revolves around that.

Yes, EV have zero localised driving emissions. However, to produce them they are worse that normal vehicles.

Also increased EVs mean more charging infrastructure is needed, and Australia is lagging in that respect. Our vast distances will always be a problem. Inner city is a different issue.

On top of that charging cars consumes electricity at a rate that is frightening.

Given the increasing reliance of wind and solar power, Australia is incapable of meeting that demand.

As usual successive governments have proven to be short sighted in their policy making and again we the taxpayer will be affected.

EV Sales – the latest sales results have been released for YTD April 2025. There are a number of interesting trends starting to emerge. The key one we will be chatting about here is the declining amount of reported EV sales.

For the month of April there were 90,614 new vehicles delivered. For the year so far, total sales have been around 381,000 units. This includes some 13,000 heavy vehicles.

Of the sales over 41% were petrol. Second pace was diesel with 29.5%. Both those show a decline from last year. EVs account for less than 5% of recorded sales. This is about half of what they were for the same time last year.

The growth is in Hybrid and PHEV sales. These now account for about 20% of recorded sales. This is about 15% up on the same time last year.

This makes sense. Hybrids combine better fuel economy with zero impact on convenience. PHEVs also provide some EV only range and as technology improves that range also improves. However, they are still convenient to fill up when needed. \

Cars are a necessity for workers and a lifestyle choice for many buyers. The amount of people that want to waste their time sitting while their car charges or go to the expense of installing home chargers are dwindling rapidly.

So, the answer to the question Are EV Sales finishes” is no, they do have a key place in the automotive industry, but I believe they will never attain the total dominance some evangelists will have us believe.

This is a Motoring Minute

EV Sales – There has been a lot of talk recently about the booming EV market. Well let’s have a deeper look at it.

So far this year BEV sales are about 50,219, which is a touch under 8% of total sales. June results saw a decline in monthly sales.

Now I believe that around 8% is the natural market demand. To date that has been soaked up by early adopters, buyers that want to try something different, buyers that feel an EV suits their localised lifestyle etc.

However there has also been a bit of research lately that has shown that a significant proportion of first time buyers wouldn’t buy another EV.

I also think we will see a shift more towards to corporates and government departments being the major buyers of EVs, rather than individuals.

We have also seen new entrants, mainly from Chinese brands like BYD, MG etc with increasingly cheaper EVs offered. This has led to substantial discounting on brands like Tesla, which does nothing to engender brand loyalty for buyers that missed out.

This has a two fold effect. It destroys resale values of existing EVs, as we have seen, and makes some brands question the substantial investment they have made into EVs with diminishing returns.

Electric cars have a place for buyers, but they are not the total solution that many evangelistic parties want them to be.

This is a Motoring Minute
