But the truth is completely different.

The only environmentally good thing about them is that they have zero driving emissions. This means zero localised pollution. That’s a good thing in cities. But to produce the EV they usually have a larger environmental impact than a normal fuel-based car.

I recently had a medium sized EV SUV. I live about 200km north of Sydney and by the time I pick up the car and drive around Sydney then home I’m usually 250-280km into a 480km range. So about 40% left.

Where I live there are only two public chargers available. So, I usually charge at home overnight. This EV went down to 20% left so I plugged it in for 26 hrs and it only charged to 60%. Not enough to get back to Sydney.

The choice for EV buyers is to either be forced to spend anywhere between 20-50 minutes t a public charger. That’s assuming that there isn’t a queue, or that its actually working.

Or install a charger at home for a cost between $2000-$11,000 dollars. Or take forever to charge from a normal 240V 10-amp plug.

I’ve said it before; the car was the greatest invention for our lifestyle ever. It fits into our lives easily and allows us freedom.

However, with an EV you have to arrange your lifestyle around charging the car. That involves major compromises usually.

There are some benefits to an EV, but convenience definitely isn’t one of them

This is a Motoring Minute
