Built on a new EV specific architecture that is shared with Porsche the Q6 heralds a step forward for the brand.

Q6 e-tron offers a choice of drive configurations: from a single motor rear-wheel-drive variant to dual-motor all-wheel drive, with performance-oriented models like the SQ6 e-tron at the top of the range.

All versions use a 94.9 kWh useable battery pack capable of fast DC charging, meaning you can recharge a large percentage of the battery in around 20 – 25 minutes at high-power charging stations.

Range is strong too, with many versions rated over 600 km on the WLTP cycle, helping ease range anxiety. However, like fuel consumption figures real world range often differs. And low 500km is more realistic.

As you would expect the premium interior is driver focused. There is reasonable space thanks to the new platform.

Technology is a focus as well with a departure from the central stacked screens to a large horizontal design. It is practical and well laid out.

Audi are drivers’ cars and the Q6 e-tron displays a combination of quiet, refined electric driving with responsive performance. They will happily potter along but scoot along when asked, especially the SQ6 versions.

Subaru Solterra is one of my favourite electric vehicles. It is a lot to fun to drive and retains the Subaru DNA for adventurous drivers.

With 212 mm of ground clearance, Dual Mode X-Mode and Drive Mode Select, the vehicle maintains its capability, allowing drivers to explore far beyond the normal roads and highways.

The designers addressed one criticism of the outgoing model regarding range by incorporating a larger 74.7 Kw/h lithium ion battery, which now provides a WLTP range of up to 566 km.

Combined with that is a lift in power from the dual electric motors up to 262 kW.

Not only does it have more range and power, but it will charge faster with maximum charging increased to 22kW.

Inside the first thing you notice is the 14 inch central touch screen. This houses the infotainment and wireless smart phone connectivity. Complimenting that is wireless charging as well for compatible devices.

New LED ambient lighting offers 64 customisable colours, while acoustic glass and refined suspension tuning help ensure a quieter, more composed drive.

With some styling upgrades the Solterra also has a more athletic yet sleek exterior look.

Pricing for the 2026 Subaru Solterra starts from $63,990 plus the usual costs.

All, these changes are needed to keep the Solterra competitive with the ever growing list of EV models available.

Bold lines, sharp angles, and a front end that practically dares you to call it ‘ordinary.’ The large grille is more for show than function. But hey, it does make the car look like it is serious. Even if it’s not exactly the business of conventional SUVs.

On the road, the G6 delivers a smooth, quiet drive. It accelerates well enough to make you think you’re in something more expensive. Hitting 100 km/h in just under 6 seconds. Not bad, though it’s not exactly giving the likes of Porsche or Tesla a run for their money.

Still, the driving experience is solid with precise handling and a ride that’s more about comfort than thrills. Perfect for those who like their journeys free of drama.

Inside, Xpeng G6 has gone with a minimalist approach. The dashboard is dominated by a massive touchscreen that handles everything from navigation to climate control. It’s sleek and modern. But if you’re someone who still prefers buttons that make click sounds, this may feel like a bit of a leap.

There’s ample space in the cabin, with decent legroom in the back. Cargo area that’s large enough for your weekend gear. But not quite the moving truck you might need for an impromptu road trip.

Overall thoughts

Overall, the Xpeng G6 is a solid entry in the growing world of electric SUVs. It’s stylish, performs well, and has enough tech to make you feel like you’re driving a car from the future. Though, without the need to figure out how to actually use that future tech.

It’s an interesting choice for anyone looking to embrace the electric future without needing to say goodbye to comfort and practicality. Just don’t expect it to turn every trip into a thrill ride. Or to make you feel too nostalgic for your old petrol-powered car.”

My first impressions are that its impressive

I do like the sleek and modern Q8 styling. Especially the way the headlights integrate into the grill.

Inside. the seats are exceptionally comfortable. And the cabin is packed with all the modern features you’d want in a premium SUV.

It’s spacious, with ample room not just for the driver but also for passengers, including those in the middle seat.

With a powerful electric motor and QUATTRO drive, the Q8 is incredibly smooth.

There’s a calm, refined feel to the way it handles the road, yet it also has plenty of pace when you put your foot down.

One of the standout features for me has been the range. After some driving, it still displayed 610 km remaining with about 80–85% battery left. That’s seriously impressive and removes a lot of the typical range anxiety associated with EVs.

There is something distinct about the way an Audi drives. The Q8 e-tron has a solid, confident feel to it that’s hard to replicate.

Overall, it’s a fantastic vehicle—luxurious, refined, and exactly what you’d expect from a premium electric SUV.

The first thing you notice is its striking design. For a large SUV, and it is large, is the elegance of the styling. It somehow manages to hide its bulk with clever and sleek  lines.

The EV9 Air comes with a 76.1 kilowatt hour battery that provides 160 kilowatt of power and 350 Newton Metres of torque. This drives the rear wheels through a one speed reduction transmission.

With a low centre of gravity and rear wheel drive its fun to drive. The biggest problem is that the EV9 Air weighs some 2300kg and that tends to dull the responsiveness. The other issue is that real life range is about 420km maximum. Charging at home takes a while as well.

Inside the first thing you notice is the space. Its cavernous inside. The drivers’ seats are particularly comfortable. In front of the driver is the wide screens that have become a Kia feature.

The middle row seats have a slide function as well as the ability to fold flat. They also have two isofix and top tether points for baby seats.

The boot is large, but I do wish there was a five seat version for even more room.

Pricing is from $97,000 plus the usual costs and that’s expensive.

For the month of April there were 90,614 new vehicles delivered. For the year so far, total sales have been around 381,000 units. This includes some 13,000 heavy vehicles.

Of the sales over 41% were petrol. Second pace was diesel with 29.5%. Both those show a decline from last year. EVs account for less than 5% of recorded sales. This is about half of what they were for the same time last year.

The growth is in Hybrid and PHEV sales. These now account for about 20% of recorded sales. This is about 15% up on the same time last year.

This makes sense. Hybrids combine better fuel economy with zero impact on convenience. PHEVs also provide some EV only range and as technology improves that range also improves. However, they are still convenient to fill up when needed. \

Cars are a necessity for workers and a lifestyle choice for many buyers. The amount of people that want to waste their time sitting while their car charges or go to the expense of installing home chargers are dwindling rapidly.

So, the answer to the question Are EV Sales finishes” is no, they do have a key place in the automotive industry, but I believe they will never attain the total dominance some evangelists will have us believe.

Now we have all been educated that electricity and water simply don’t mix. In fact, it’s usually a quick one-way ticket to disaster.

I thought about this as I needed to charge the EV I had last week. It was a Kia EV5 GT Line. Good car with reasonable range but I was running out.

I usually charge at home in the open and it was pouring with rain. In fact, it was deluging.

So, with much trepidation I connected the charger and switched it on. The worst thing that happened was that I got soaked. I did ensure that the ends of the lead and the car plug in were dry when the went together.

And the Charger quietly went about its business while it continued to pour rain.

So despite all our caution, the answer is YES . EVs can be charged in the rain. The engineers and manufacturers have developed failsafe systems to ensure there are no problems. Manufacturers follow strict international standards, such as the IP (Ingress Protection) ratings, to ensure their equipment is safe to use outdoors. If there are any problems the charging stops.

Despite all this I would also urge caution to be safe at all times.

This all-electric SUV from Subaru feels different from the normal EVs.

I like the design. It stands out from the crowd.

I also like the fact that its just at home around town as it is on dirt roads. You can be a bit adventurous because it is a Subaru and comes with their famous All Wheel Drive system.

With a 71.4-kilowatt hour battery, the Solterra has a realistic range of around 400km

This has been great for my daily drives and charging at home is a breeze with the 10-amp charger included.

Inside Its comfortable and feels spacious. I’m driving the top spec Touring model, so it also comes with a few extras as well.

With a Harmon Kardon audio system your favourite songs come to life while driving.

One thing that you notice is the flat top and bottom steering wheel. It actually feels different and practical. It also sits a little lower than a raised digital driver instrument screen.

The Solterra rides and handles exceptionally well. It is responsive in acceleration and steering and overall is quite fun to drive.

However like many EVs it’s a little pricey at around $77,000 plus the usual costs.
