The safety features were excessively intrusive and the beeps and bongs overly annoying.

However fast forward just a few months and the manufacturer has fixed almost all the issues.

What we have now is an extremely interesting electric SUV.

For a start is looks great. Many recent EVs look like they have come out of the sane design school. The DEEPAL SO7 looks just different enough to be stylish.

The fixes mostly revolve around software updates. The new theme is that you can select to turn off some of the intrusive safety features and they stay off.

It should be noted that many of today’s intrusive safety features are driven by the need for ANCAP to try to keep its relevance. Not consumer demand.

DEEPAL SO7 comes with a 79.97 Kw/h battery with a WLTP range up to 477 km. It has 160 kW of power and 320Nm of torque. This drives the rear wheels through a one speed reduction gear transmission

None of these figures are outstanding yet they combine, especially the rear wheel drive, to provide some fun driver engagement.

That seems to be the essence of the DEEPAL SO7. It somehow manages to ingratiate itself to the driver. It’s actually really pleasant to drive and feels simply comfortable.

On top of its good looks the S07 is a technological superstore. It’s absolutely packed with technology in all aspects. Comfort, safety and driving.

Like a lot of Chinese brands, I turn off a number of level 2 Autonomous Driving safety features in the S07 every time I drive it.It does take a while though and is annoying. Thankfully, DEEPAL are looking into that from local feedback and amending some of these intrusions.

Priced at $53,900 plus the usual costs it’s also outstanding value.

On the road the S07 is smooth, quiet, responsive and a bit of fun. I love the steering wheel and the whole interior ambience. There is plenty of room for three occupants in the back seats, even with the drivers seat all the way back. Boot space is reasonable.

A 79.97kWh ultra-high efficiency battery powers the DEEPAL S07, delivering 160kW of power and 320Nm of torque. The WLTP driving range rates up to 475km, and I had no trouble achieving that in real-world conditions.

Overall, the Deepal S07 is definitely worth  a test drive if you are in the market for a mid-sized electric SUV.

The S07 is a mid-sized all electric SUV. It is quite stylish, and the interior seems to follow the current trend from Chinese manufacturers. This includes a premium soft touch ambience, a huge central screen and an abundance of technology.

The S07 comes in one luxuriously equipped model. The SO7 is equipped with a 79.97kWh ultra-high efficiency battery. The  WLTP range of 475km1 on a single charge isn’t too bad.

I haven’t driven it yet obviously. But the claimed maximum output of 160kW and a robust torque of 320Nm, should deliver a responsive and dynamic driving experience.

It also comes with features such as:

• wireless smart phone connectivity and charging,
• heated and ventilated front seats,
• premium sound system and
• an Augmented reality HUD.

Pricing for the Deepal SO7 hasn’t been announced yet, that’s coming at the EV show in mid-November.

One thing is for sure though, with the abundance of new EV models and brands coming, pricing will need to be good value.

The advantage that the S07 has is that it stands out. It’s a little different from the others and that’s a good thing
