This is the more adventurous version of the two models offered and we drove the LTZ the week before.

is Aimed at the off-road enthusiast, The Silverado ZR2 looks the part. With raised suspension, big mud terrain tyres and for its size impressive approach and departure angles.

At its heart is the impressive 6.2L V8 Hemi pumping out 313kW of power and peak torque of 624Nm. This is combined with a 10 Sp AT with external cooler and a two-speed transfer case with push button controls to select between two- and four-wheel drive.

The ZR2 has both front and rear diff locks that are manually selected.

One interesting feature is that the rear diff lock can be selected in 2WD and I did just that when I dug it deep in sand, on purpose, in 2WD.

Sitting in the Silverado ZR2 is every bit as comfortable and luxurious as a Toyota LandCruiser GR Sport. And that’s an interesting comparison as the Silverado ZR2 comes in some $6500 cheaper.

It has more internal room, more tow capacity, more payload and as much luxury and comfort, maybe even more.

This is why I love American Pickup trucks so much.

The 1500 LTZ Premium is designed for buyers that may be looking at one of the full-size 4WD wagons.

Inside it dwarfs any large 4WD or SUV with enough room for my 190cm frame to sit in the back seat and my knees don’t touch the back of the front seat.

It has the luxury of a premium SUV as well.

With a long wheelbase and large tub, its actually well proportioned. It also looks smaller than it is. It does feel big in suburban car parks though.

Performance comes from a  6.2L V8 pumping out 313kW of power and peak torque of 624Nm. While those figures are impressive, there is a lot to haul around. The engine management system will shut down cylinders when not needed to maximise fuel economy. Apparently, it will go down to 2 cylinders when appropriate.

Its thirsty around town but will cruise happily on the freeway. Most people who buy these Pickup trucks usually are wanting to tow something heavy. That’s where they excel.

The Chevrolet Silverado LTZ Premium is priced from $130,500 plus the usual costs and you get a lot for that money.
