In November there were 125,497  new vehicle sales recorded. This is slightly down on the same month last year.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice, but its slowly declining. Next is diesel. Taking up the sales from petrol are hybrids and PHEVs. These are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason.

Coming a distant last are pure EV’s. Sales are around 8.1% YTD despite there being over 110 models available for buyers.

SUV’s continue to grow in popularity with a touch over 60% of sales. Light commercial vehicles that include work Utes and delivery vans account for about 22% of sales and passenger vehicles are now around 15.7%.

Toyota remains the number one brand with almost 2 ½ times the sales of second place Ford. They are followed by Mazda, Kia and Hyundai.

The next top five spots include Mitsubishi, GWM, BYD, MG and Isuzu Ute.

Of the top ten models sold in November, seven were SUV’s and three were Utes.

There are now over 60 brands available in Australia. However, while supply is increasing, demand remains fairly constant. If I remember my old economics degree, that spells trouble for some brands but should be a bonanza for buyers.

The other factor to watch is just how much growth will the Chinese brands have over the next few years. My guess is that they will become a problem for some established brands.

This is a bold move considering that the market is now almost 60% SUVs and that EV sales are less than 5% market share.

The G80 EV comes in one highly equipped AWD model.

Powered by a 94.5 kWh battery. The G80 EV has a WLTP range of 570km, but a realistic real-world range would be closer to 500km.

Inside the 27-inch OLED display is a prominent feature. The front seats are especially comfortable.

Rear seats are true limousine quality. Abundant leg room from the extended wheelbase and individual seat controls make the rear a pleasant place to sit. Oh, and for those that don’t like opening their own doors the rear ones are powered.

For the audiophiles there is a powerful 17-speaker Bang & Olufsen premium sound system.

As you would expect Genesis has thrown everything in the G80 EV that they can, even an  UV-C Sanitising Console to keep germs away.

Priced from $155,000 plus the usual costs, the Genesis is actually good value.

Cars such as the Genesis G80 EV are becoming rare but bring an element of affordable sophistication that is needed in the market.

Once again Toyota was the top selling brand followed by Mazda, Ford, Kia, and Hyundai. The next top spots went to Mitsubishi, GWM, MG, Nissan, and Isuzu Ute. With Subaru sitting just outside the top ten.

SUVs remain the dominant market choice now accounting for 60% of sales. Of the top ten models sold in April, three were Utes, 6 were SUVs and one passenger car.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice followed by diesel. Then the combination of hybrid and PHEV is growing. EVs are still sluggish. Hybrids are the growth segment with more buyers choosing them for the economy and convenience combination.

PHEVs had a decline partly due to the change in FBT exemption availability. An example of misguided government changes.

Total EV sales for the YTD are around 4.6% of total reported sales. This again shows just how out of touch the Government NVES legislation is with everyday consumer behaviour.

This is also a global phenomenon with EV sales slowing almost everywhere.

Well for one of our contributors, Anthony Hood, it was a Kia Carnival.

He took the Carnival GT Line with the 2.2L diesel engine and 8 speed automatic transmission.

I asked him what he thought, and his response was simple – I loved it he said.

He specifically mentioned little things like the fact that it didn’t really matter how much luggage the five of them took the Carnival swallowed it with ease.

The seating plan also allowed the boys to be separated so they wouldn’t fight during the trip.

There are USB ports everywhere so each boy could have their own iPad plugged in. Cup holders everywhere as well. Large windows allowed great visibility for the passengers of the endless motorway.

The rear electric sliding doors are so practical in crowded Gold Coast car parks.

Other factors he mentioned are that even though its relatively big it doesn’t feel big driving it. It drove like a big SUV, smooth, powerful and economical. And he appreciated the safety features on the long drive.

The huge digital driver instrument panel and central screen showcased a myriad of information. Its also not that expensive for what you get at around $72,900 plus the usual costs.

There is a reason why the Kia Carnival has over 80% market share in the people mover segment. Its that good.
