The new car sales results for September have shown a slowing of the growth experienced to date this year.

There were some 97,020 new vehicle sales recorded for the month. YTD figures for the first three quarters has exceeded 900,000 sales, but the shine is starting to dim a touch.

September figures are about 12% down on last year.

Utes and SUVs are still popular with all of the top ten vehicles sold being either of these. Almost 79% of all sales to date have been an LCV or SUV.

Petrol remains the dominant fuel choice with about 43% 31%. Diesel the next choice with about 31%.

Hybrids and PHEVS have shot up in popularity now accounting for almost 16% of sales. They are about double what they were last year. That’s phenomenal growth and shows the buying public favours these over EVs.

Pure EVs are dropping and now account for less than 6.5% of sales.

Toyota remains the leading brand, followed by Ford Mazda Kia and Mitsubishi. The next top five brands are Hyundai, Isuzu, MG, Nissan and a new entrant GWM.

I think what we will see in the remaining quarter is a slowing of deliveries and maybe end up even with last years results. Some brands have the winds behind them, some have headwinds. It will be interesting.

Isuzu MU-X LS-T – Like a lot of families, Christmas for us was spent at a few different houses and a lot of driving. To do that we chose an Isuzu MU-X LS-T.

Not because we were heading off road, but because we were doing lots of long-distance driving.

We went from Sydney to Wollongong, back to Sydney to Nelson Bay, Grafton then the Glasshouse Mountains and back again.

Overall, we drove some two thousand five hundred kilometres over a few weeks and here are my thoughts.

The MU-X LS-T is spacious. It fitted all our luggage and presents, food and other gear easily.

When we went for day trips it fitted five adults in comfort.

It’s just so relaxing to drive long distances. One day we drove over 850km and arrived feeling relatively fresh.

There is more than enough performance for highway cruising and its economical. We averaged 7.7 litres per 100km for the full trip.

The MU-X LS-T also comes with a few practical features like wireless smart phone connectivity, and considering we drove through torrential rain in southern Queensland the 4WD and safety features were comforting.

We all know the Isuzu MU-X is a great 4WD and towing vehicle, but its also a practical and comfortable family SUV for everyday use.
