The new car sales results for the YTD to October have been released. Australian customers have taken delivery of just over one million vehicles this year.

This is a year-to-date record.

This is in part due to easing supply issues and delivering on existing orders.

Of the top ten selling vehicles, three were Utes, and the other 7 were SUV’s.

YTD SUV’s are still surging with about 56% of sales, Light Commercial with about 22%, passenger cars are still declining with around 17.5% of total sales.

Petrol remains the most popular fuel source, with 49.5% of sales, followed by diesel with 30.5%. Hybrid cars including the plug-in versions account for around 9% of sales and electric cars account for around 7% of sales YTD. Heavy commercial vehicles make up the difference.

Toyota is still number one selling twice as many cars as Mazda at number two. They are followed by Ford, Kia, and Hyundai. The next five are Mitsubishi, MG, Tesla, Subaru and Isuzu.

Final sales and positions will be determined a lot by who can get supply for the last two months.

This is a Motoring Minute

GV80 – I recently drove the Genesis GV80 SUV. It comes in a range of engine choices as well as seating styles. The model I drove was the 3.0 litre diesel with six seats and the luxury pack.

This is priced from a little under $120,000 plus the usual costs. Its expensive but actually good value compared to other premium SUV models.

The GV80 is stylish and looks bold and handsome. It cuts an imposing presence on the road.

Inside its luxury and comfort all the way. The list of clever features is almost endless.

The seats are particularly comfortable. Heated and cooled of course, with electric adjustments. Its like a lounge chair for the driver.

Passengers aren’t forgotten, with individualised middle seats also heated and with slide ability.

I had to sit in the third-row seat for a trip into town and found it more comfortable than most others.

The 3.0 Litre diesel engine has more than enough power and torque as well as excellent economy. The 8-speed automatic is smooth and gest the most from the engine.

For something this size it’s a breeze to drive around town. Quiet, comfortable, and luxurious.

I really enjoyed the GV80 and was sad to hand it back. It’s an ideal premium family SUV for those that appreciate a little more quality.

This is a Motoring Minute

More Genesis GV80 3.0L thoughts

For a big SUV it has style and grace

Often mistaken for a Bentayga.

Its still big though at almost 5m in length

Inside the ambience if luxury all the way

Front seats are like lounge chairs with massage function.

The large central screen has excellent clarity and functionality.

There is a heap of space inside.

All three rows of seats will comfortably accommodate normal sized adults.

When taking passengers, they all seem to want the middle captains’ chairs.

Driver information is looked after by the large 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster and 12.0 inch HUD.

I’m not really a fan of the rotary dial controls.

The six seat Luxury option pack throws everything in the car you could possibly want.

Boot space with 4 seats is huge, with 6 seats in use not so much.

The engine and transmission combine well for performance and economy. Smooth and powerful.

Sometimes the ride from the low profile 22-inch tyres is a little harsh and skittish

Don’t let the AWD in the name fool you. This isn’t meant for anything more adventurous than the gravel road to the country estate or snow trips.

It feels big in tight suburban shopping centre car parks.

Out on the open road though its feel great.

Also look at.

Large luxury SUVs are popular these days. Genesis GV80 sits between the top end premium brands in price, but not quality, and the larger mainstream brands.

Genesis GV80 3.0L Final thoughts

I liked the big Genesis. The six-seat version of the GV80 is a luxurious and comfortable place to sit.

With a 3.0L diesel engine and 8 Sp AT it has plenty of power and performance.

While its not really an adventurous AWD it will be great for snow trips etc.

One key factor with all Genesis vehicles is that they are excellent value for money, usual when compared to what you need to pay to buy an equivalent vehicle.

My only real gripe with the GV80 is that its big. It doesn’t look it, but it is. And that can sometimes mean difficulty parking it in tight suburban shopping centre car parks.

A lot of this is filling existing back orders as supply is starting free up globally.

This is on the back of a record July as well.

Toyota is still the number one brand with twice as many sales as Mazda which is number two. The other top ten brands YTD are Ford, Kia Hyundai. Followed by Mitsubishi, MG, Tesla, Subaru and Isuzu Ute.

Of the top ten vehicles sold in August three were Utes, five were SUVs, one passenger car and one electric car. Toyota HiLux remains the top selling vehicle YTD.

SUVs account for about 56% of sales and are still growing. Light commercial vehicles about 22%, passenger cars about 18% and the rest in heavy vehicles.

Petrol remain the most popular fuel of choice followed by diesel. These two make up over 80% of sales YTD. Hybrid and PHEV vehicles are growing. Fully electric cars are about 7% Of YTD sales.

The interesting statistic is that Toyota is starting to turn around the sales slump as supply comes in. Also Tesla and MG are still sitting in the top ten brands.

More Car sales details

New vehicle sales achieved the highest August result on record as Australian customers took delivery of 109,966 new vehicles, a 15.4 per cent increase on the same period in 2022.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said back-to-back months of record-breaking new car sales was positive news for car manufacturers and consumers.

“The Australian automotive sector continues to demonstrate its strength, with August recording unprecedented sales figures, reflecting both a high level of demand from Australians and improved supply of vehicles.

“Year-to-date sales have increased 9.9 per cent which is a better indicator of the underlying strength of the market.” Mr Weber said.

Mr Weber added that electric vehicles accounted for 6.4 per cent of sales and hybrid vehicles accounted for 10.5 per cent of sales in August.

“As consumers continue to embrace low emissions technologies we are seeing growth in electric, plug-in and hybrid vehicle sales. More than 1 in 6 vehicles sold in the month of August featured low emissions technologies.”

However, this figure reflects orders that were placed sometimes up to 12 months ago. Supply is slowly catching up after the last few years.

There is a lag effect and with tighter economic conditions the economy is going through now, what will the sales be like in another 6 months.

The trend towards SUVs continues with almost 59% of sales. Most of those are in the small to medium segment. Passenger cars are now down to 17.7%

Of the top ten models sold for July, three were Utes, four were SUVs, one was an electric car and two were passenger cars.

Toyota remains the top selling brand, but significantly down on last year. They were followed by Mazda, Kia, Ford Hyundai. The next five brands are Mitsubishi, MG, Tesla, Subaru, and Volkswagen.

Petrol remains the most popular fuel choice followed by diesel. Hybrid and PHEV accounted for around 10% of sales for the month as well. Pue electric vehicles were around 7.0%, mostly from Tesla reported sales.

This is a Motoring Minute

New Car Sales YTD July 2023 more details

New vehicle sales achieved the highest July result on record as Australian customers took delivery of 96,859 new vehicles.

This is an increase of 14.7 per cent on the same month in 2022 and breaks the previous July record of 92,754 in 2017.

FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said that the July 2023 result was an indication that the market continued to recover from supply shortages resulting from COVID plant shutdowns, microprocessor shortages and logistics and shipping bottlenecks.

“During the past twelve months the issue has been one of securing supply for consumers, however as these pressures ease, we are starting to see a return to more stable market conditions,” Mr Weber said.

“Many of these vehicles were ordered several months ago, so it is important to monitor the broader economic conditions through 2023 and their impact on private and business demand.

What is selling most?

Mr Weber added that sales in the passenger vehicle segment remained at an historically low level, however many of these sales have transitioned into the SUV category.

“Passenger vehicles now represent 17.7 per cent of the market in July while the SUV category now sits at 58.9 per cent. However, contrary to widely held opinion, not all SUVs are large vehicles as 75 per cent of SUV sales are in the medium, small and light categories.”

Sales of zero and low-emission vehicles continued to grow with 17.9 per cent being battery electric, hybrid or plug-in hybrid models. Battery electric vehicles accounted for 7.0 per cent of July sales.

China continues to grow in importance as a country of origin with 15,853 new vehicles being from that country. That is an increase of 130.1 per cent on the same month last year.

Car Sales by State

Citroen C5-X – Sometimes I drive a car that doesn’t quite fit in a box. The Citroen C5-X is such a car. It’s a blend of car, wagon, hatch, and SUV all rolled into one exquisitely styled vehicle. The C5-X is the premium model for the French brand and comes well equipped. That you would expect.

What you could also expect, given it’s a Citroen, is innovative design, some quirky features, and a limousine like ride.

Inside the layout is different and some of the controls take a little getting used to. The central screen can be individualised, perhaps a little too much. But its spacious and extremely comfortable.

The C5-X is powered by a turbocharged 1.6L PureTech Petrol engine, producing 133kW of power, driving the front wheels through an 8-speed Efficient Automatic Transmission.

It performs well above what the raw figures would indicate. Around town its punchy, but on the freeway the long legs really take effect and it cruises effortlessly and economically. I got around 6.3l/100km on the freeway and that was with some enthusiastic driving.

The Citroen C5-X is an elegant presence in a segment that sometimes gets hung up on badges and loses its individuality. Its for buyers that want something just a little different. At a bit under $58,000 plus the usual costs its also an absolute bargain against other premium brands.

This is a Motoring Minute
