Hybrids and PHEVs are more popular than EVs for buyers

Hybrids and PHEVs – Today on Motoring minute I want to chat about the changing buyer trends around EVs and alternative technology.

EV Sales 4 Pic collage

The government is trying to force buyers into EVs, globally many brands have sunk billions of dollars into developing EVs. Some brands have even state that they will become an EV brand only. That’s not working out so well for them.

In Australia the government introduced draconian NVES legislation that basically restricts buyers’ choices or increases the costs of buying what they want.

And its all starting to fall apart.

The latest sales figures for September have been released and it shows that EV sales are declining.

The early adopters have all bought, the second wave have bought now, and the private buyers have all but dried up.

It’s the large corporations, the three layers of government and instrumentalities that are the buyers now.

Sales are less than 6.5% of sales and declining.

In that same time the sales of hybrids and PHEVs have doubled. They are now some 16% of sales and growing every month.

They combine better fuel economy, reduced C02 and nitrous oxide emissions with convenience of zero range anxiety and quick refuel times.

Convenience is the key here. Despite what the EV evangelists say, they are not convenient, and buyers are waking up to that.
