Subaru Forester – Regular Listeners will know that I recently went to New Zealand for the launch of the sixth generation Forester.
Today I want to chat about the stunning backdrop to the drive.
We flew into Christchurch for a briefing and dinner on the first night.
Next day another briefing and off we go. Heading west out of Christchurch the snowcapped mountains are always in your view.
The Canterbury Plains are well known for their agricultural productivity. This also brings beauty in green fields, all cocooned by lots of tree lined wind breaks. It’s a unique landscape that engages to senses at every turn.
The other thing you notice about this northern section of the South Island is the rivers. There are a lot of them. All have rocky banks which allow you to get up close. The colour of the water is an aqua green /blue almost. Coming from the melting snow.
We went to a local tourist icon. Lake Heron station. This has been owned by the Todhunter Family since 1917. Its an amazing 48,000 acres and as well as farming, sheep, and cattle, they operate many tourist adventures such as Heli skiing, Air BnB and more.
We were lucky enough to go for a long drive on the property. Again, with the snow-capped mountains, a bit closer. There are wide rocky riverbeds, creek crossings, mud, and lots of dirt.
This is Forester country. It was absolutely in its element. An adventure playground, where the symmetrical AWD, X-Mode and 220mm of ground clearance provided peace of mind.
