Car Sales results YTD January 2025

Car sales YTD January 25The January 2025 new car sales results show the market slowed down over the last six months of 2024.

Actual sales are down 3.3% on January last year. Sales of New cars are always an indicator of general economic conditions and as I’ve been saying for a while we are in a recession, it just hasn’t been called yet.

The sales of hybrids are around 17.1% and PHEVs around 2.2 % so in total hybrids make up almost 20% of sales.

Pure EVs accounted for just 4.4% of sales in January. This shows just how out of touch the Federal Governments NVES Legislation is with everyday consumer behaviour. They are trying to force consumers to buy cars that for many simply don’t fit their lifestyles or needs.

Toyota was the leading brand with over 21% of sales, followed by Mazda, Ford, Kia and Mitsubishi. These are followed by Hyundai, MG, GWM, Nissan and Subaru.

The top selling vehicles was the Toyota RAV4 and that was almost exclusively hybrid sales.  All of the top ten vehicles sold were either Utes or SUVs.

Its interesting that brands such as Isuzu, that has only Utes and SUVs and Ford that are about 90% Utes and SUVs are still there, the NVES penalties haven’t bitten yet in pricing.
